Loose Reserve Risers!

Recommended Posts

I’ve been paying allot of attention to my rig lately and trying to learn it in and out. One thing I have notices is that my reserve risers seam somewhat loose as compare to what I see around the DZ. When I say loose I mean there is a little play under them, (read: minor, I can easily slip my fingers under them) and they kind of bunch up just slightly when I close the riser cover. The container is a 2000 JAV with a PD176 and SABRE 170 in it. My rigger says that the risers on some JAV’S just don’t lay into the reserve tray completely neat and there is nothing to worry about. Looking at it I can see of no problems that could arise; just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.

Also I’m not to sure about the different types of reserve risers but I’ve noticed some have a different color stitching on them and layer of different colored material sandwiched between the black. Mine are just solid black. I know the ones with the colored stitching are a bit stronger; what are the proper names for these two and can they be switched out?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I've seen a double mal on a friends rig named miracle mike who should be dead because of loose reserve risers and an rsl. I would get it checked out. There should be a way to get it to fit right. It might be nothing. Im not a rigger either.

The risers should fit snuggly over the shoulders. Generally there is nothing to be alarmed about but it's not how it should be. On the RSL side it's a little more of a challenge due to the velcro and the rsl.

I learned a Packing technique a while back where you pull the risers down inside the yoke instead of over the shoulders. After the reserve container is closed, the risers can be pushed back over the shoulders. The reserve risers will be held down by the freebag as they should be.

Yes, Miracle and those loose reserve risers....make your rigger repack it right>:( so that there is no play.

Javs are pretty notorious for having some slip in the reserve risers, especially the older ones. Especially with the way their RSL is routed under the riser. A good rigger should be able to keep them from slipping too much, but I've found they do move around more than on other rigs.

Perhaps the wisdom you seek will be found with the licensed rigger you first engaged.

The reserve risers are not interchangeable, as they are an integral part of the harness.....the different colored thread fpund in some webbing is called a 'rouge yarn' and identifies the manufacturer that made it. Perhaps you will learn more from your rigger, who knows you and your equipment than from a disinterested party that who may not be qualified to read a crystal ball.

Your DZ rigger deserves to become aware of your concerns and anxieties as well as your respect and praise.......Perhaps you will go to him and tell him you agree.......

Best wishes and perhaps you might become a rigger yourself one day.......the first step is to learn from one close at hand.....the rest is up to you.

Cheers,

Yes, it is easy to get a too muche slack in the reserve risers on some Javelins.
The reserve risers have to do a major turn to enter the container on the smaller Javelins, and that is where the slack develops.
Your local rigger should adjust your risers for free. Sometimes this involves opening the reserve container, re-positioning the risers and re-closing.
Hint, I often stuff the reserve risers an inch or two too deep and only pull the correct amount of slack after the container is closed.

Um, actually it identifies the type of webbing and thus it's tensile strength. Black centerline- type 8 4000lbs. Yellow selvadge edges- type 7 6000 lbs. Black selvadge edges- type 13 7000 lbs. There are more but these are the main ones for harnesses.

Mick.
