HC5 used as still camera

Just managed to score a beat up HC5 for very cheap. Anyone have any luck using the Hypoxic interface to take stills while shooting video? I figure it might be a good way to get a few pictures during 8-way filming without having to haul along a still camera. (Well, 3 pictures per dive, anyway.)

ENTIRELY lens dependent, Bill. It shoots "decent" web-quality stills, maybe even with some Pshop you might get a reasonable 5x7.
It's an interlaced sensor array that processes and then tosses half the information.
The attachment is a screengrab from an HC7 with a crummy wide/SD lens, but it's not too bad. It's been recompressed for web, so that doesn't help, but this gives you an idea of what to expect.

These are pictures from a HC5 (PAL)
The picture on the ground is with the photobutton (compressed 5% to meet the 300kb upload requirement)
the other photos are videocaptures from the HDV footage (made in pinnacle studio12). Lens is a waycool .25 (relative low grade but nice small for handcam)
Camera is in manual focus, no anti-shake and beach exposure mode

Not super quality, but I mail the passengers a couple of files for free when they buy the DVD. Quality is ok till approx 4x6in. I always tell them it's a videocamera, not a photocamera

when you have the camera on top. Press the photobutton with your hand. I've seen several vidiots do this because they lost the biteswitch of their photocamera. It's the result that counts, not the way to achieve this result

So I tried it with a Raynox HD-5000PRO (which I think is really the 5050) and I got so-so results. Center was decent, lots of chromatic aberration on the edges. (See below.) Vignetting too, but maybe that's unavoidable.

Any better lenses out there? Is the Century any better?

wow..if that's the 5050, not very good at all. Much worse than I'd expect.
The auto-setting looks pretty weak as well, but I don't shoot my HC5/7/9 on auto, ever. Never tried, to be honest.

Either way...something sure doesn't look right.

My results are exactly the same as Bill's.

I tried it once, fussed with a few settings and gave up quickly.
