SuperGirl 0 #1 May 17, 2008 Before you all jump at me, yes I did a search but maybe I wasn't using the right search keys because I didn't find enough info, or the threads I found were too old and might not be that relevant anymore. If you point me to the right threads, I'll be very thankful... So. I'm thinking of starting to fly with a camera. Only to record the jump, not really planning on anything special for now... I love it when others have video of my jump, so I'd like to be able to return the favor. I'm looking for some advice on getting a cheap but decent first camera. I'm willing to spend $200ish on it, more than that would make me care about it too much, and that wouldn't be safe... I was just looking at the Sony DCR-HC28 http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCR-HC28-Handycam-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B000M3IND6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1211058232&sr=1-3 Any thoughts? Any better suggestions?

Any better suggestions? Fixed the link for you. The 28's fine for a first point and shoot camera. Just be aware it doesn't have LANC port, nor A/V or "S-Video" INPUT. Only OUTPUT. PhreeZone 20 #3 May 18, 2008 Just putting a camera on makes you care about it. If not use duct tape to hold it on and if it falls off who cares right? The thing is that most people who video "just to record my jump" end up getting distracted by it at some point. Ususally its because they are tired of only getting 3 seconds of footage that is somewhat reconizable about what is occuring so they start to fly slightly differently to have footage that they can actually stand to watch. That slight change is all it takes to cause issues.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
SuperGirl 0 #4 May 18, 2008 Quote Just putting a camera on makes you care about it. what I meant by not caring is that if I have to cut it away I won't think after the jump that "geesh that was a lot of money I just cut away"... there's different levels of caring about it... you care a lot more about a $1000 camera Quote The thing is that most people who video "just to record my jump" end up getting distracted by it at some point. Point taken. I do realize that. I also remember reading an article a while ago... I think it was by billvon (?) about how he started screwing up some big ways because of the camera... what I mostly mean when I say it's just to record jumps is that I don't plan on needing anything too professional, I'm not thinking I'll make money doing video or anything like that. Therefore the camera doesn't need to be fancy, just something that does the job.

LANC - after googling I understand what it is. Should I care much? Is this the kind of thing you need for those helmets where you can put a little switch somewhere else? A/V and S-Video inputs - why do I want these on a skydiving camera? when would I need them?

LANC for if you want an external indicator light and control for stand-by and record (Cameye) A/V inputs for if you want analogue inputs to record to your camera from an analogue source (VHS, DVDR, or another camera that doesn't do digital). The camera does have IEEE1394 (firewire) so if you can go digital you have in and out. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
