Is this gonna work?

Recommended Posts

Well, I just ordered a new safire 189 for my new mirgae g3 the other day. It wasn't until shortly after that I learned that the new safire actually has a larger pack volume than the old safire and now I'm stuck with a canopy that, as far as I can tell, will not fit my container. The container is a m4 mirage that claimed to have a 'tight' fit for the older safire 189. What do you guys think? Longer closing loop and life is good... or am I in trouble here?

Sounds like your stuck with a container that wont hold your main. You can always get your money back for the Icarus if your not completly satisfied. I dont think getting a safire2 189 into a mirage that would hold a safire1 189 is impossible. I would try it out first. Dont go getting a smaller main just to fit in your new rig though.

Chris,

Contact Simon at Icarus to explain the situation. Icarus has a 30 day money back guarantee.

I had a Safire1 189 and ordered a Safire 169. The 169 actually flies better than the Safire1 189 so you may be able to downsize to the 169 and not notice any difference.

By no means extend your closing loop to an extent that the grommets don't line up.

It packs larger, because it IS larger. A Safire 1 is about a size smaller then stated. See the various Icarus email quotes on this forum.

But with the 30 day money back guarantee from Icarus, you can't really go wrong: you can order a smaller Safire2, or you could also even order an original Safire..... This assuming you're comfortable with a smaller main, of course.

Part of the confusion is caused by the fact that Icarus changed their measuring methods in 2001. Before 2001 Icarus used a method similar to the PIA standard.
In January 2001 they switched to Performance Designs' measuring method. The same canopy measured by PD's method will produce area numbers about 5% smaller.
For accurate volume numbers, you can only trust figures published by container manufacturers.

My advice would be to ask the best packer on your DZ to do the first dozen pack jobs, then decide. Chances are you will end up with the Safire 2 packed tightly into your old container.

According to this chart, only the Sabre is measured about 5% smaller by PD. Spectre sizes are totally different. For example 107 Spectre seems to be 99sqft. and 120 seems to be 135 sqft. :S 36sqft. difference when going just one size up.

Stiletto seems to be measured differently too..

thanx for the reply guys... the canopy should be here in 4-5 days so I'll know then what to do... sounds like the right idea letting the packer have at it for a while... if he can barely do it then I know I have a problem![:/]
