HD framegrabs

Recommended Posts

I came over an idea the other day, and need your points of view on this matter.
Are framegrabs from a HD camera good enough to be sold as stills to Tandemspassangers? Is it considered unethical to use framegrabs as stills?

I started thinking about it since I'm considering of buying an HD within the next 2 years. But the plan is also to get a photo camera to offer stills to the customer.

thanks

*generally* not, unless you're grabbing for 5x7 or smaller.
If you're using a wide angle lens of any kind, you've immediately reduced the effective resolution of the image by at least 50% or more, so at that point, the frame grabs are good for 3x5 and that's about it.
Great for web though.

I used to know someone that was selling frame grabs as stills. They were jumping at the same DZ as people with 10D's or at that time even film cameras. I always felt really bad for the people that bought stills and ended up getting that person handing them photos that were only able to be blown up to 3*5 with out looking super grainy compared to their buddy that got 5+ megapixel stills handed to them. The excuse I heard then was "My neck can't take all that weight" and "digital stills cost too much", that person ended up out of the work rotation a week or two later since the decision was made, real stills or no stills.

HD frame grabs are great for the web, but don't expect to print them out at 8*10 or other sizes I see people blowing their tandem picture up to all the time.
