possible Cypres startup failure

Recommended Posts

The following extract is from APF Newsheet 140.

Quote

Equipment Care. I have found that it is possible for a CYPRES to indicate that it is turned on and functional after it has completed its self-test on the start-up sequence even though the cable to the cutter was severed. It is possible that if gear is dropped with force onto a hard surface the cable could be severed next to the cutter cable plug connection. This would only occur with gross mistreatment of a rig. I have witnessed a jumper, who was upset about something, throw his rig onto the ground in frustration after a jump that did not go as planned. Treat your complete rig with care, follow ALL the manufacturers’ recommendations and requirements for packing, servicing and handling and your equipment will safely perform as designed.

I don't know if anyone else has heard about this, but I thought I would put it out there.

Thank you for posting that. Sometimes it seems that even the most experienced (especially the most experienced) often treat their rigs like something other than a life saving device. It makes me cringe to see people dropping, dragging, and tossing their rigs about. I may be a noob, but I don't treat my (rental) rig like a rugby ball :S

I find it hard to believe that there is no open circuit fault detection on a Cypres, or any other modern design AAD.

Has anyone thought about e-mailing Airtec with this?

Although this is not an excuse to bad news your rig.

In the late 1990s, I saw two dozen Cypri with cracked cases. We assumed that cracks were caused by dropping rigs on concrete. The cracking problem seems to have disappeared after Airtec started installing plastic stiffeners in Cypres pockets.

Dropping any rig on concrete is a bad habit.
