FliegendeWolf 0 #1 May 29, 2003 Just asked a seller a question about a rig they had for sale and this is the response: Quote1. What is the DOM of the cypres? Answer: Why does everyone want to know the DOM of the cypres? Truthfully, I don't know. I purchased the cypres at the same time I purchased the rig in 1995. I would assume the DOM is close to same as the rig. But I rechecked the reserve packing card and it doesn't mention it. What I can tell you, is that during one of my reserve repacks in 1999, the rigger told me that there was a modification/upgrade to the cutter that had to be installed (to the tune of about $250). I'm not savvy enough to tell what exactly it was, but I paid for the upgrade. The system has fired once during a jump where I had a massive brain fart. Did a low-pull and ended up with two canopies out at the same time. So I can tell you it works. (and yes, the cutter has been replaced since then) Should I run? skybytch 273 #2 May 29, 2003 Sounds like this person hasn't jumped for a few years and didn't know much about their equipment even when they were jumping. Based on what they said it sounds like the Cypres d.o.m. is sometime is 1995 - it will need an eight year and batteries this year (probably needs batteries now since it sounds like they weren't done in 2001). Make the sale dependent on an okay from your rigger and it should be fine. Just cuz the jumper doesn't seem real knowledgable doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the gear. bwilling 0 #3 May 29, 2003 QuoteWhy does everyone want to know the DOM of the cypres? Duh... everyone wants to know the DOM of the Cypres because it only has a 12 year life span, from the Date Of Manufacture So you have to know the DOM to calculate the remaining years of life left, and the approx. value of the unit. You should not buy a Cypres with out knowing the DOM ! And the seller's 'assumption' that it's about the same as the rest of the rig could be totally wrong. Watcher 0 #4 May 29, 2003 run? probably not. The DOM is probably 1995. The "upgrade" she mentioned was the 4 year service check which is standard. Of course this also means that 2003 is another mandatory service check, so whatever price she is quoting remember that you will have to pay another $220 to get the units 8 year check. It just sounds like she is more into jumping less into knowing her gear, and lets her rigger handle all her gear stuff. Just remember with the 8 year check and a 1995 DOM its only good for another 4 years, I would not pay more than $200-250 for that component. PS: I used the she pronoun because I assumed Jamie is a she, even though I know some Jaime's that are male, I tend to think of it as a female name so I used the she pronoun -- Jonathan Bartlett D-24876 AFF-I
PhreeZone 20 #5 May 29, 2003 Field replaceable cutters were not around for the first few years of cypres manufactor so that when older units were being sent in they could be "upgraded" to field replaceable cutter models. Before this if you had a fire the entire unit had to be sent to the factory, a new cutter installed and returned to you.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
tigra 0 #6 May 30, 2003 Just watch what you pay for it, and have a rigger you trust inspect all the gear. Keep in mind, if the cypres was made in 1995, then it only has 4 more years on it, plus its due for the 8 year check. (around $250.00, plus batteries). So, you've got to spend around $300.00 (give or take) just to be able to use it. Since you can get a new one for around $900.00, this one doesn't add much to the value of the rig. That's just something to think about. maura
