Dropped my PC-1000... now doesnt record sound

Recommended Posts

I dropped my camera yesterday on the carpeted concrete floor...:( It didnt have any visual damage, nothing broke and it seemed to be working fine. I made a few more jumps with it, it operated as usual, no issues. But when i got home and tried to review the tape, i saw that there is no sound. Tried to record some more - it doesnt record the sound anymore... no sound from the internal speaker and no signal going to the TV. But only when recording to tape, when recording to memory stick - there is sound.

Any ideas? Anyone had a similar experience? Has anyone dealt with Sony repair service? How much would it be to fix it (camera Not under warranty)?

Thanks!

P.S. just found out that it would be $311 flat rate... geez...

...hmmm

does the 1000 have a jack for an external mike.?? have you tried to see if THAT connection is good???
either way,,,, you might have to get yourself a very tiny phillips screwdriver.....and build up some courage, and consider fixing it yourself ...:o:)

i have opened and repaired just about each of my sony camcorders,, over the years...Fixed the michrophone on the vx 1000, fixed the cassette carriage on a trv27, the zoom function on a trv 7.....
Lots of the components are joined together with flexible conductor tapes.. some carrying up to 6 or 8 wires.... very delicate, yet durable. the ends of these plastic tapes have plug in connectors, which,,,,, well, Connect !! :S:P
to small P C boards or components like lanc, or input/output jacks.

Could be that the fall, jarred or displaced the tape wire coming from the internal mike.......or the wire running TO the outputs,
Find a well lit, clean work area,,, get a magnet, to keep track of the tiny screws. Open the case,, and carefully seperate the outside casing parts.... be gentle.... be patient...it's possible that the case will open but still be connected, via linkages, wiring etc. so.....
don't go yanking on things.... >:(
Use your EYES...B|
if you DO see a connector that has pulled loose....smile !!! B|;)
then figure out how it re-connects,, and gently, align it, and carefully mate it back up...
A small straight head screwdriver laid flat, might give you the push factor you need to re connect, without having to try to get your hand or fingers in there....
.... re align the case.... press together. re insert phillips screws....hope that you do not have toooooo many screws left over !!!!!...:).....good luck...
jmy................ o[:-).......

That IS scary! :o:)
I dont know if it has an external jack, but if it records sound to the memory card, it makes me think that the internal mic is still working... I will try to put this tape into another camcorder to see if the sound was actually recorded. If it was then it's the output connector issue. But then why is the internal speaker working with mem card and not with tape?... :S I dont know...

Thanks for the tips, Jim. I might have to take it apart just for the heck of it, since i paid only 450 for the camera "used". It served me well for a year and paid for itself, but spending 300+ on repairs... i'd rather buy a new one  I guess this will be a good way to learn a new skill

" I might have to take it apart, just for the heck of it "......

don't do it for THAT....

take it apart so you can FIX it....what do you have to lose???
worse thing,,,, you don't like what you see and you put it back together...
best thing,,,,you find the problem and fix it.

c'mon.. c'mon.. you can do it... head to radio shack and get a set of small screwdrivers.....

or... :o:o you can give up on this camera,,,[:/] ( you did say you got your moneys' worth out of it.....):|

and the next time you're at the DZ,,, toss it outta the plane with a pilot chute and bridle.....:S If it stays 'stable' and you set it up with the lens facing down and the record mode works..... you could get one helluva video of true ground rush.....:D;)...be sure of what's below you... check with dzo, staff, etc. to assure safety, spot for it's landing, and don't go much above 5 grand...
could be fun......:o:):D
it would certainly be the last gasp for that camera....... but what a way to go.....B|

jmy
disclaimer... don't mind me,, I'm in a silly/stupid mood today...:SB|[:/]:ph34r:B|;):)
