WeakMindedFool 0 #1 April 24, 2007 I have been talking with Sony about the problems with the HC7. I have gotten to where I'm not talking to tech support rather to engineers. They say there WAS a modification to the HDR-HC7 between runs that may be causing the mpeg skip problem. The problem has been handed over to Japan and they will keep us informed if they come up with a fix. PEACE! WeakMindedFool 0 #2 April 30, 2007 The final word from Sony... There is no fix. The suggestion was made to place the Camera in an air tight enclosure. I've tried it with no success. I've tried HD tape with no luck. I even turned on the wide angle conversion lens button with no success. I had a guy who works on sony cameras explain why optical stabilization is bad for skydiving (basically he feels that a standing wave gets built up in the mechanics from the vibration) so unless anyone else has any Ideas????? Back to the PC1000...I hate fucking top mounts anywayPEACE! BGill 0 #3 April 30, 2007 Even if it is a no-go for the HC7 fix, maybe this will at least make the engineers at Sony more conscious of the issue for future models.
LouDiamond 1 #4 April 30, 2007 If it's any consolation, I have not experienced any of these problems with the HC5 to date(touch wood). Perhaps thats the model better suited for skydiving."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
WeakMindedFool 0 #5 April 30, 2007 Yeah...were seeing the same here in nor cal. Those with HC5's Happy....Those with HC7's....Sad. The guy I talked to yesterday has done a lot of work on sony cameras. He went through an explanation of how optical stabilization works and I'm pretty sure he hit it on the head as to why the HC7 is not good camera for freefall...which explains why the HC5 (Electronic stabilization) is better for what we do. I would switch but...I do love the HC7 for a ground camera...I also love my pc1000 for freefall. I really do hate top mounts, for big-way freeflying they are kind of dangerous. Think I'll wait on the solid state stuff. PEACE! LouDiamond 1 #6 April 30, 2007 Have you tried side mounting the 5/7 yet? It requires an L bracket about 2" longer than the stock BH L bracket so that you can get to the tripod screw. As far as width, it is about the same width as the TRV22/33 which I have jumped side mount for some time with no issues."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
guscabana 0 #7 April 30, 2007 O.K, then is confirmed the problem is in the optical stabilization system. I will get the 5 after selling the hc7, I still need hdv for the good stuff. Thanks, Gustavo
SkymonkeyONE 4 #8 April 30, 2007 QuoteIf it's any consolation, I have not experienced any of these problems with the HC5 to date(touch wood). Perhaps thats the model better suited for skydiving. There is a big mix of HC1's, HC3's, and HC5's here at Z-hills. Nobody I know has any problems at all with any of those three models.
WeakMindedFool 0 #9 May 1, 2007 Yeah, I tried side mounting the HC7 and didn't like how far it stuck out. I've been spoiled by the PC1000 and thing all cameras should be very small and high quality. Did you ever have problems with riser strikes with a side mount sticking out that far? I never jumped it in that configuration but it just seemed to stick out too far. To Gus: Yeah brother, I've tried everything I can think of, talked to every expert I could get to talk to me and I'm convinced this road is at an end. I might see if I can sell mine on ebay and get an HC5. Most of the video I shoot is from the inside so I don't really need the HD....I just want it real bad! HEY anyone out there want to buy an HC7? LouDiamond 1 #10 May 1, 2007 QuoteDid you ever have problems with riser strikes with a side mount sticking out that far? None at all. I noticed no difference in my openings when I switched from a PC100 to the trv22/33 side mounted."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
DSE 5 #11 May 1, 2007 I guess I just don't fly nearly as aggressively as you guys do.... For the belly/back shots I'm taking (as well as a couple guys on the DZ) not having issues here. Optical isn't as good as Electronic in consistently shaken environments, no doubt. Electronic is softer and less saturated due to DSP, which is why it's generally less preferable. damonsteele 0 #12 May 1, 2007 I have the HC7 and I placed in a blackbox (from Cookie) on top of a FTP. I have NO issues! I guess I got lucky. I don't use it for freeflying (I have a 105 on a Rawa for that). The picture is steady and shake free. Here are my settings Shutter Speed 1/60 Steadyshot ON Wide Angle Conv ON Manual Focus set to infinity Circular Polarizer I'm keepin' mine!
