kingbunky 3 #4 May 22, 2003 i have a homemade jumpsuit, but i didn't make it myself. the wife of another jumper did it, and did a great job! it's an rw suit with grippers made of pipe insulation wrapped in a contrasting color of material. i don't know what she used for a pattern but i would assume that a standard coverall-type pattern would work. as far as material goes, i would assume that it's like buying a suit, different materials for different uses. mine is a rough cotton, baggy suit to slow me down."Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." eWave 0 #5 May 22, 2003 I have homemade freefly-suit and pants. Both made by good dressmaker and really kicks ass! I don't want to pay big money for a suit, when I can get it much cheaper using person I know for sewing. But that's just me If you have someone to sew, or you can sew yourself, make your own suit. Much cheaper and nothing worse on it (if you know what to do )
fundgh 0 #6 May 22, 2003 See thread on Making ff pants... but as far as material is concerned...Go to the fabric store and look at nylon based and poly-cotton mixes. I found that most fabric stores don't have the right kind of nylon mix that makes for good J-suits, but there are all kinds of poly-cotton mixes that work well. Material is not as critical as fit IMO! Pick something funky, and not too expensive and go with it. You will probably need 6-8 yards, depending on your size and how good you are at getting the most out of a rectangular piece of material. AS far as a pattern is concerned...Sacrifice some clothes, cut em apart and trace em. I freehanded a copy of some cords and a t-shirt, and freestyled the rest. Makes sure you add about 12 inches to the length! Advice-cut material oversize, pin it on you, sew it, and makes sure it fits right before cutting off excess material. You can always rip the seams if you screw up....FUN FOR ALL!
Snowbird 0 #7 May 23, 2003 I've made 3 RW suits now. The first time, I looked at a bunch of different suits, pulled a pattern and made it out of scrap cloth. I made adjustment to that, cut it apart and used that as my final pattern. Worked great. The only big mistake was the cloth I used for the grippers. It was way too weak and ripped right away. I've replaced it with tougher denim. The whole thing cost me $30. Next challenge, freefly pants... Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -Robert A. Heinlein
