flat, semi, and fully eliptical question

Recommended Posts

I am currently on a spectre 150 and looking to maybe change canopies soon. Not really looking to downsize, but looking to try a different kind of canopy. I just don't understand what the difference is with the elliptical-ness of the canopy? Will I get more lift on landing from a semi or full elliptical than I get out of my spectre? I hear people talk about elliptical or semi elliptical all the time, but I don't know what it means. Anyone able to shed some light on a rookie thought? Thanks.

Semi-elliptical have either the leading or trailing edge tapered. Full-elliptical have both tapered to approximate an elliptical shape. The degree of the tapering is one of many elements a designer will tweak.

Generally an elliptical canopy will turn and dive faster than a non-elliptical canopy of the same size.

Your Spectre is a (7 cell) semi-elliptical.

What I'd do if I were you is demo a couple of semi-elliptical 150sqft 9 cells like Safire2, Sabre2, Silhouette, canopies like that. See if you like them.

Basically, these are more marketing terms than descriptions of the shape of the canopy. Generally, something described as 'fully elliptical' will turn and dive faster than something described as 'mildly elliptical', 'semi-elliptical', or 'tapered'.

Most modern main canopies, even student canopies, are shaped, tapered, or elliptical (that is to say non-rectangular) to some extent.

Neither do most of the people you hear talking about it!:P All the discussions about whether a particular canopy is semi-elliptical or fully-elliptical are completely meaningless.

Look at this http://www.performancedesigns.com/faq.htm#5 for more info from PD.

It's also worth searching this site as this has been discussed many times before.

Hope that helps.

I know the feeling, I started with sabre 190 to a Safire 169 incredible difference, now I have a couple jumps in my crossfire and the difference is heaven from hell, more glide more radical turns, in general more agressive love it. If you ask my opinion go with safire same loading and then try a complete elliptical, Safires are great canopys to learn their can be forgiveness or agressive.
