R1ch 0 #1 December 4, 2006 Scene setting first -I currently teach static line, dispatching from a door on left of fusealage. My vision is to get an entirely open face (ie without chin piece moulded to the helmet) helmet and mount a camcorder (hopefully sony 1000) on the right side of the helmet (thereby giving better picture of student exiting aircraft). My question is can it be done (does RH side mount cause problems with any other kit - esp deployment?) and what helmets are suitable (Skydance Scion and Arrow II are the only ones that look suitable and the later only because the twin ditter mount looks big enough to fix an L bracket). Of course i plan to use the kit for FF videoing also. Any suggestions/ideas and views welcome. Many thanks in advance R1ch
dragon2 2 #2 December 4, 2006 A few jumpers here jump the open face Z1 from Parasport Italia, with their pc-style camera sidemount, usually with the chin piece. ciel bleu, Saskia
freekflyguy 0 #3 December 5, 2006 I have a Pro Tec with a side mount that I use for just that purpose. I also fid it food for filming students 1 on 1 as well as for free flying. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
mccordia 74 #4 December 5, 2006 Id go with a helmet that houses your camera inside (FF2/Rawa) or get a good D-Box. With SL dispatch you'll most likely bang your head onto into the door and cieling more then a dozen times, and also have to stick your head out of the door constantly, which means lots of moisture... If you want your camera to last longer then 6 months...get a good enclosed helmet...JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?
mccordia 74 #5 December 5, 2006 We have one jumper at my home dz who had to replace his risers, when the sidemount L bracket started cutting into it. Riser slap onto your camera during opening is also a serious issue with a sidemount. Ripped off LCD screens and complete viewfinders and recordbuttons are a quite common sight with people that jump this setup for a long time...As are issues with moisture (blue bars, stripes, digital artifacts)JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? freekflyguy 0 #6 December 5, 2006 I spent the best part of 5 years diaspatching student almost every day and never had a problem. Tha said my camera is mounted on the left and as such is protected somewhat by my fat heed. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. Having some added protection around your camera doesnt hurt, as it CAN save your camera IF something weird happens...thats not to say it HAS to happen.. There's also peope that smoke 3 packs of sigarets a day that live to be 105...JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?
R1ch 0 #8 December 6, 2006 Many thanks to all replies - Still keen to get the open face, RH side of helmet mount, but, as a consequence of your advice likely to go for a D-box style mount. Blueskies R
