Is my camera dirty ?

Recommended Posts

Recently I have had some issues with my camera. Now and then I get some disturbance on the picture. The other half of the screen goes much darker and starts gleaming. (or something) This usually lasts only for a couple of seconds and goes away. But it sure makes those seconds of footage useless so I must get rid of it.

My guess would be that somehow the "recording heads" are dirty and need to be cleaned. Am I right ?
If correct how should I clean them/it ? Cleaning casette ?

Also I would like to hear how to avoid this. There are all kinds of rumors like : you shouldnt use casettes from other peoples cameras or you should only stick to one brand of DV-casettes etc. are these rumors true at all ?

Thanks !!

On my Sony PC105 I get bright horizontal bars when pointing towards some very bright surface or area, but this is only if I have it in sports mode. If I select another mode, the weird effect goes away. Perhaps this is what you are experiencing?

Could be lots of things. I once used a camera that one of the boards in it was going and it would cause the night shot to flicker on and off even with the switch off. It looked like a strobe and drove me nuts.

Get a cleaner and see if it helps, if not its probally a parts issue and you might want to look for a new camera ;)

Yes. I have noticed the same thing when using sports more. But this is not the issue here..

Thanks anyway..

Also I will try to post a picture of it so we can see if someone has had the same problem...

Sounds kind of like vertical smear, a common problem with a lot of ccd's that only shows itself when the camera is used in a high contrast situation ( exit shot with the bottom of the plane in one part of the screen and the sun in the other, or when shooting a tandem from underneath with the sun behind ). Sadly, if that is your issue there is not much to be done about it. If I get some free time I'll see if I can find a frame in some of my video and post it.

ok... Thanks a lot for the help. This kinda does resemble the problem I have. Its hard to tell from the picture u posted, but you could be right on this. Anyway If I remember right the disturbace has always been exactly half of the picture vertically. Yours is only about 1/4 of the picture. I have to check this out...

Thanks
