hmmm... i just bought a rig that was apparently "pencil whipped", so i don't even know when the last time the reserve was repacked (before last week, when i had it repacked) was, it _seems_ it was sometime in 2000-2001... now that i own it, i assure you it will be more often tho.

During jumping season every 4 weeks, off season (or when I am away, or not jumping for any reason) when the beastie is sat on top of the wardrobe, nope. I don't touch it, but I will 'pre-season' check the beastie every time after such a layoff, which includes the riser maintenance, amongst other things, which I won't mention in order to stimulate some thoughts and discussion on this..

Every time I pack my reserve or swap canopies in my rig. I guess I should start doing it more often.

Maybe every 6 months, maybe longer. I chop a lot - never had a hard cutaway, do around 400 dives a year, dont fall over and get dirt in my stuff and replace risers every 500 jumps as recomended.

I spin my 3-rings before every load. Flex my 3-ring about once every two weeks or more often. Clean my cable at least once a month, if not more. It takes less then 2 minutes to do the entire system.

i HOPE MY RIGGER DOES IT:):) I do swap canopies from time to time and (knock on wood) havent biffed in the dirt, so I usually let my rigget do it....Ill prob start a little more often now though..this post has peaked my interest

You know, there is actually some credible evidence that that's a bad idea. The theory goes that the oils on your fingers aren't the best thing in the world for the webbing in the first place. Additionally, the dirt that gets on the rings/webbing sticks to the oil and creates a sandpaper-effect on the chafing strip inside the #2 ring fold.

I read a report on this a while back, and basically what it said was that you're really not doing much for yourself by spinning the rings, but you could be negatively effecting the life of your risers by doing so. I'll see if I can't dig up the article.

Incidentally, you're supposed to replace your risers every 400 jumps (along with your p/c), so this would probably reduce the amount of wear caused by this sandpaper thingy, but why do it if it's not helping?

Flexing the risers is important so they don't take a set and have problems unfolding when called upon...for anyone out there that didn't know.

Once per repack, once every time I switch canopies, once whenever I think about it. It averages out to every 60 days. My backup rig gets done once every 120 days, but that one only gets jumped maybe 5 times during that period and spends the rest of the time on the shelf in the gear room.

This is something that just like a reserve repack, simply needs to happen. It takes 2 minutes, and i have never failed to to it.

My rigger cleans the cutaway wires when I repack (2-3 times/year). I have never thought of doing that more often before, maybe I should, but is that needed? I checked my wires now, they didn´t seem to be dirty at all (after 4 months). Or are we talking about dirt that I can´t se with my eyes?

I flex the three rings when I change to another canopy, which I do rather often at the moment. And I flex them if I just waiting for the sun to start shining if I have nothing else to do. Or if I realize that I haven´t done it in a couple of weeks. I don´t count the days though.

Btw, Hooknswoop, that information you pm'd me was most excellent for this here newbie. I would suggest that anyone who's just getting gear and not terribly sure what to do pm Hook and ask nicely if he'd be willing to send it to you, as well. Quite informative!

I usually remember to do my 30-day three ring maintenance because the person who started this thread (Hooknswoop) is also my current rigger. So he's not only has he told me to do it, but he also occasionally handles my rig and can tell if I'm cleaning my cutaway cables or not.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
