Swoopyswoop 0 #1 May 15, 2003 If anyone doesnt know that mirage has issued a recall on there rigs for faulty reserve pins. I have noticed this several times watching our rigger at the dz open these containers. Every single container I have seen him open, the pins wrer no longer staright. they all had a slight bend to them. That wouyld make for an interesting premature opening if you were headown "when I die, I want to go like my grandfather while im sleeping, not like the passengers riding in the car with me Swoopster A.S.S. #6 Future T.S.S holder
PhreeZone 20 #2 May 15, 2003 The recall was only issued on certian pins, specifically Mirage 27” Soft Reserve Ripcord, part #SH01-27, batch #M005128, mfd. 11/25/2001 – 5/10/2002. Unless every ripcord you've seen is in that batch one thing that can lead to bent pins is riggers that over tighten the pack job.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Albatross 0 #4 May 15, 2003 It is no the premature opening that I would stress about. I would really be concerned about the pin you could not extract and no cyress.Chris

On certain rig's, the rig manufacturer request's an angle from the pin manufacturer, are you talking about this? And confusing the straight pin of a Javelin, with the kind of angled pin of the Mirage. If a pin breaks, that would be definitely a bad thing, but a pin should be able to bend without breaking (though a bent pin isnt good either) but even with a large bend (i.e a curved deployment pin) I dont think it would cause a reserve deployment. You are correct. A pin SHOULD bend when it is side loaded. The problem with the recalled Mirage pins is that they may be too brittle, and will break if improperly loaded. A broken pin might make it impossible to deploy a reserve, and that would be a very bad thing. So, a bent pin is a kinda bad thing and should be replaced. A broken pin is a very bad thing, and should be avoided at all costs.Tom Buchanan Instructor Emeritus Comm Pilot MSEL,G Author: JUMP!
