What do you think about Parachutists Photo Policy?

Recommended Posts

What do think about Parachutist "exclusive first run only" policy for accepting pictures for publication?

Unfortunately I didn't realize this until after I submitted a photo I took of a POPS NY State, United States & World Record RW Night jump that was recently completed to both Parachutist and Skydiving Magazine.

I was blown away when I was told by our USPA magazine that they wouldn't publish this if Skydiving did too!

I don't really care personally about my picture not being in there but the fact that this group won't get recognized properly by USPA really leaves a bad taste in my mouth >:(

Any opinions or advice?

It creates interesting thought processes as to where to send your photos for sure..

But think of this example, compare them to newspapers / news channels, they want the exclusive rights to your footage, at least for a little while.

I understand their policy and I try to work with them, so I won't send them the same photos of an event, I'll send them both photos of the event, but I make a selection as to which one I send where.

Look at the world team 400 way photos that got published in both magazines.. they were of the same event, but different angles, cause they each want the exclusive first.

they each want the exclusive first.

I think even though they want "exclusive photos", they know they are not going to get "exclusive coverage" (and aren't asking for it), and this is a good thing for us and them. As a subscriber I like the fact that I get two magazines to look at each month, but if each magazine had the same pictures in it, then I would question why there are two magazines in the first place. An analogy: both mags may write articles on the same event, but we as subscribers certainly wouldn't want to read the same article twice. Same with pictures.

I've only been submitting pics for a few months, but here's my trick, and it's worked for me: I got different sets of pics, from the same bigway event (wingsuits), published in both mags at the same time.

Step 1: Select a grouping of my favorite pics for the month (10 photos, for example).
Step 2: Send lo-res copies of the group to magazine #1. Tell them to indicate which ones they are interested in, and I will reply with hi-res copies. They usually reply very promptly.
Step 3: Send hi-res copies of requested photos to magazine #1. If I started off with 10 photos and mag #1 request 3 of them, now I have 7 remaining.
Step 4: Send lo-res copies of remaining 7 photos to mag #2. Tell them to indicate which ones they are interested in, and I will reply with hi-res copies.
Step 5: Send selected photos to mag #2, hi-res.

I am then leftover with a few pics that neither magazine selected that I can hold onto for a rainy day. :)
Pat, surely you took more than one photo of the jump? Find two that are very distinctly different, and submit one to each mag. :)

this has worked for me....

decide who you like to work with better and send them all you have to offer and see what they want. THEN, send the rest to the 'other' guys and give them a chance to pick over the leftovers.

OR...and this hasn't worked all that well...

send them BOTH everything you have to offer on the same email and put down it's a first come first serve deal.

The second option made me feel a little odd about it, so I stopped. First option has worked the best for me.
my pics & stuff!

What I have done in the past is put the photos up on my web page and then sent the link to the magazines that may be interested. I don't know if they call each other, or have a very different opinion of what they like...but they've -always- picked different pictures and it hasn't been an issue sending them -both- what they want. I just then send the high res files to them once they've made their selection.
