Side mount suggestions? PC109, PC110, HC40, HC26

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have an NVertigoX with a L-bracket on it that my PC7 was supposed to rest on, but right before it was to go up for its beer jump, it decided to crap out on me. So, now the question lies in what camera to get next for my side mount.
I do not have a CamEye currently, but one would be keen. I know that would be a problem with the HC series because the LANC port is on the right side, right where my L-bracket is. I have a Kenko 37mm .43 lens and I will be getting whatever step-up ring is necessary.
Anyone have any strong opinions toward or against the PC9/109/110 and/or HC20/26/40? I have been eyeing up a PC9 on ebay, but it just snuck over $200 and I am teetering on it. The 110 is also looking pretty interesting.
So, thoughts? Help a fledgling videot out.
Not again!

My current camcorder is a 109 and many friends have them and they ALL have had problems. Mine is less used but is starting to have problems rewinding.

I wouldent reccomend the 109.

Perhaps because they were all made so long ago? Not sure why people are always posting on here asking if they should buy a camera that was discontinued years ago. When I was in the market for a camera one year ago, I only considered newly made stuff. My HC90 has lasted one year so far and is still working fine. I'm sure in a couple years it will stop working, but at least I will have got a full life span out of it.

I see your point, but here's another thing.. why spend almost a grand on a camera that will produce the same level of footage as a 200 / 300 dollar used on off of eBay?
If people ask me what camera to buy, I would still recommend them a TRV17 / TRV27, I've seen both these in action (I have 1000 jumps on my TRV17) and they just last forever, and you can pick them up cheap on eBay.

The HC96, which is in my opinion the best non-HD Sony DV cam out there, can be obtained brand new in 48 hours from a reputable dealer for less than $600 - not even close to $1000.

I have never owned or examined footage from a TRV27, but the specs of the HC96 are superior in two of the most important aspects: pixel count and CCD diameter. I disagree that it will produce the "same level of footage". I just searched eBay (including "completed items" in the past 30 days) and could not find any TRV17 or TRV27 for sale or recently sold. In addition, the TRV is much bigger than the HC.

So, if you want to wait a couple months for a bigger, older, lower quality camera to pop up on eBay, you may spend $300. Or you can spend $600 for a smaller, newer, higher quality camera, and have it immediately.

My choice is obvious. :P;)

but if people dont want to spend the money.. the older cameras work just fine..

Yeh, I have actually never really heard of any problems with the old cameras, but when Mykel said he and all his friends had problems with the 109, I suggested maybe because it was old... but he debunked that idea anyway since he said the problems happened in the first year.

Good luck with your HC1, if my HC90 ever dies I might get the HC3 or whatever else is out then.
