masher 1 #1 May 12, 2003 I'm in the market for my first rig. One rig that I'm currently looking at is a Racer Elite with a Sabre 150, PD 143 reserve with Cypres. The container, reserve and main are all 97 vintage, and the system has "less than 100 jumps". It looks like, as the lines on the main are still white, and the fabric is still slippery. The riser covers are secured by velcro. The cypress is a 1/02 vintage. It's currently setup as a pullout. I did a few jumps on it this weekend (loaded at 1.1), and it was very nice. A couple of my instructors seemed to have a little problem with due to the fact that it is a Racer, but I didn't have the time to delve deeper into that, the the velcro riser covers, velcro toggles and potential resale value seemed to play a part in that. and probably reserve repacks too... The asking price is AU$4500 (~US$2900). That includes two altis as well. Does that price seem reasonable? I did a quick calc (only using knowledge gained from here) and came up with about the same price. . There's also the potential of purchasing a ~95 Javelin with a Sabre 135 (~400 jumps) with cypres off one of my instructors. He said he'd sell it to me for $4k (~US$2.6k). I don't know what the reserve is, but it hasn't had any jumps. I'm pretty sure the cypres is coming up for it's 8yr service. . What do you people think? I haven't had a chance to jump the Jav yet, but I'll ask this weekend. Just thought I'd ask. All advice and opinons will be taken with a large grain of salt.-- Arching is overrated - Marlies
Samurai136 0 #2 May 12, 2003 The racer set up is a good deal, cost wise. The second offering is a rip off. For $300 US Dollars less you get an even older container, a smaller jumped (400) main that may need to be relined, and a cypres that you will have to pay for an 8yr service and is 2/3 of it way thru it's life cycle?!? Do they fit you well? Harness is not too tight or too loose? Personally, I would never buy the first generation Sabre and would buy a new container and new cypres2. You can get a reserve and main used about anywhere for good prices. Ken"Buttons aren't toys." - Trillian Ken

Squeak 17 #4 May 12, 2003 Hey mash boy,The Racer deal sounds good, The Jav deal is not to pricey for our market but the main is a bit small for your level. Dixie or Cameron or Kevin (@Pinjarra) will happily do repacks on the Racer, 2 of our Instructors and a couple of fun jumpers still use Racers on our DZ. If you get yourself to Dale river on the 24th May weekend you find a couple of them there, most of the guys from my DZ will be going. As a point of reference I got a '93 JAvelin (J1) with a MR150 revserve, put a new cypress and new Hornet 150 in it and the total was $5,500.00AUD. But the Racer is a good container. You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
skybytch 273 #5 May 12, 2003 The Racer rig is priced fairly. If the harness fits you well I'd go for that over the Javelin with the smaller main. Keep a close eye on the velcro and be religious about replacing it when it begins to show wear. That and find a rigger who is comfortable repacking it and you're set. I've jumped two Racers, one an Elite. They're comfy rigs.
