Digital Stills - deliverable ?

Recommended Posts

dzmemories is not part of any dz but rather someone that goes to many of the boogies.
I offer this service free to everyone ,if nothing is purchased nothing is charged.

its a whole differant ballgame. we have computers, moniters, printers etc. and set up shop in the packing areas. jumpers walk by see the slideshow and stop and look. I give out cards with web address.

I have a 30 foot orange landing arrow ,that is used at boogies to keep everyone landing in the same direction. i am usually only non jumper allowed in landing area and first to anyone that has a hard landing.

MY RULE for pictures
no pain
no injured jumper
no nudity

that way all folks at aboogie do not worry when i am around.

medical takes predident over picture takeing.

my back is allways to the wind so jumpers know if they land faceing me they are landing into the wind.

many tandum passengers elect to not get video (stupid idea) and then see themselves and purchas pics.

again long winded.

the Alera photocruiser takes me literally about 30 seconds per tandem jump. That is anywhere from about 20-30 pics per. Yes, it is really that much faster.

best investment I have made.

OK, I got the Alera and it's awesome.

I have copied to CD but I have also used it to read a memory stick directly into Photoshop on Mac laptop. Then I have written Photoshopped image back out to memory stick where it can be written to CD. This is going to be fun.

(Not that I would normally expect this to be a workflow -- but if you know that the image is going to be used, say in a newspaper and you have good Photoshop skills, you might want to do it.)

Thanks to all for pointing me to this toy and to B&H for getting it to me so quickly.

We have a small Cessna dropzone in Missouri. All our video guys shoot digital stills and burn the video to DVD (unless the customer specifically requests VHS).

The way we do it is like this... Each video we dub we add a 2 minute leader to the video. We do this at the time of editing rather than beforehand so it doesn't show up as a separate chapter that can be easily skipped. Basically it MAKES the customer view our commercial and anyone he shows his video to. While the leader is recordering we tell the PC to burn the CD-R (less than 2 minutes to setup). The CD-R is burned and finalized before I finish editing the video everytime. It's as simple as that. Doesn't take any extra time and is a lot less expensive than buying Film. While the DVD is finalizing I grab the burned CD-R and label it and find a sleeve and always have a few minutes to spare as I wait. The PC we use is USB 2.0 and we burn with Nero Burner.

I can only speak for my DVD recorder (LiteOn LVW 5006), but this one saves DVDs as multi-session so you can add data to them even after finalizing.

If a customer has a DVD drive in his PC, I simply burn the stills in another directory on the DVD. Some DVD players can even play back the stills.

And we still haven't touched on the option that with more and more dz's having wireless internet, you could also email/ftp some of the better shots to Walmart or Walgreen's. That way, instead of dropping a roll of film off, waiting for development, and then getting 24 pics, they literally can't beat the images. They'll be waiting for them by the time they walk into the photo lab. And there are so many more pics...

That takes time. You have to sit there and create an account for each person, upload the files and then send them. If you hand them a CD most 1 hour photo places will do it in 45 minutes or less.

On a Tandem I was shooting 200 megs worth of pictures. I'd hate to upload all that data per tandem to some ftp site for them to get just a few 4*6 prints.

Meijer here in Ohio will do uploaded 4x6's in less then an hour... I'm sure there are other places that are similar.

In fact I think its possible to walk into meijer with a CD (or other media) and walk out with 4x6's for as little as 25 cents a print.

Yeah, but we don't have high speed net at SGC since its outside DSL range and cable is still a new fangeld thing to watch them thar TV stations on so its pointless for me :D

Cord, Click, Meijer all do 4*6 prints at about the 30 cent range for uploads. Issue I have with uploading for a customer is even if broadband was present how much raw data is that to transfer and how much time is needed to sit there, log in to the printers site (make sure you send it to the right store since there are only like 80 million Walmarts and Meijers around here, I've got 2 Meijers and 4 Walmarts within 10 minutes of here :S), get the customers name right and then upload 30-40 pictures? 4 minutes after plugging in the memory card I've got a CD ready to hand out, the debriefing is'nt even done yet. It would suck if you upload the pictures to Walmart store A and they go to Walmart B to pick them up and nothing is there. Manifest would quickly get tired of fielding those calls around here. ;)

Oh, I think a CD is an excellent Idea... and from what I've experienced at Meijer the photos are uploaded to a central server and I can choose where to print them later.

The same is true about Click Camera too... I haven't tried walmart.

And you're correct it wouldn't work at SGC. B|

I doubt it... I have only set up an account for myself... I could experiment with the idea.

I suppose hypothetically someone could create an account for a particular person or group, upload their photos and then send the group a link to the photos.

Alternatively, you could create a shared account and organize the photos in folders based on the tandem passenger.

It may not be overly efficient though (they have an upload utility that allows multiple files to be transfered but in my experience it can be buggy at times...) and is somewhat slow even with my broadband connection (of course that may be a limitation of the cable service as I understand much of the time they limit upload speeds to maximize downloading rate.)
