The111 1 #1 December 20, 2005 If I don't have a rigid case for my helmet, what's the best option for taking it aboard an airliner? Packed (and checked) in a fairly rigid, large suitcase, surrounded by clothing? I wouldn't want the TSA people to rummage through my suitcase and repack it in a less optimal orientation, that would allow it to be crushed or something. Carried by hand, unpacked and unchecked? Other ideas?www.WingsuitPhotos.com
Miami 0 #2 December 20, 2005 Wear it? I've always traveled with my camera gear in pelican cases (1620's and 1660's for FTN/FTP), and I stick around to watch the inspection in case there is a problem. So far after 10-12 flights I've had no problems with my camera gear getting messed up. Hope this helps...Miami
freeflydrew 0 #3 December 20, 2005 I strap it to my carry on... never a problem
freefalle 0 #4 December 20, 2005 Matt, Id put it in a small duffle bag and carry it with you, I've always carried on my cameras and my helmet. The only disadvantage to carrying it on is that if you have cameras in your carry on luggage you have to pull them out at the security check point. jimmytavino 16 #5 December 20, 2005 Use a carry on bag of an appropriate size... I take the video cam(s) off the helmet and the still camera also gets disconnected at the quick release. Then you can pack the cameras into the inside of the helmet and pad them with cloth or any other padding of your choice... If the bag allows for it,, pack the charger, lenses, extra batteries blank tapes and dubbing cables in there as well... Keep the camcorder near the top,,, in case anything catches your attention while you are enroute through the airport, or pre flight or even during the flight ( if you can be discreet about it.. ) Then the video cam is good to go and easily within reach,, without having to hold the entire helmet in your hands.. Expect some attention when you go through security and explain that it is a "sports related helmet cam"..if asked . I try to say as little as possible about 'skydiving' to the security people but answer any questions they may have honestly and briefly..If possible size your carry-on so that it fits Under your seat instead of having to stash it overhead. While i might trust my rig to "checked baggage" .. I would never leave my cameras or the helmet in their charge...
piisfish 140 #6 December 20, 2005 Hey triple-one, you're overthinking it a bit IMHO. Just carry everything with you. If your helmet can be crushed if not well oriented in your suitcase, change helmet or change suitcase.scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM

mccordia 74 #8 December 20, 2005 I bought a motorcycle bag for my new FF2 yesterday. Cost me 16 euros. It perfectly fits my camera-helmet has a soft padded inside and doesn't look as funky as carrying a loose helmet (and less subject to damaging when stored in the overhead storage-compartments in the plane)JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete? wildcard451 0 #12 December 20, 2005 My helmets go in my suitcase, or last year they went in a hiking backpack and get checked, while my cameras get carried on in a camera bag. No problems so far.
