skyflyingbecca 0 #1 December 9, 2005 Alright, I know I sound like a dumbass, but I really need some help.... I borrowed a friend's Sony PC101 and filled up the tape, and now I need to get it on my computer. I went to Circuit City for the "firewire" cable but they told me I needed something else, and it doesn't work. It's a USB transfer cable, and there is a port on the cam for it but it's not communicating properly. Anyway, I can't find an actual firewire port on my laptop, so is there any other way I can get the footage on my pc? I have an S-video port, but that doesn't seem to be working either, however that might be because one of the pins on my s-video cable is broken I'm thinking the best way to get the footage on my pc is to find a firewire to usb adapter or something similiar..... does anyone know if something like that exists? pilotdave 0 #2 December 9, 2005 Easiest way will probably be to just get a firewire card for the laptop. Should be pretty cheap. Then you just need to make sure you have the right cable (usually 4-pin to 6-pin). S-video is most likely video out from your computer, not in. DaGimp 0 #3 December 9, 2005 Yeah....i was on the phone so Dave beat me to it. I agree with him, get a firewire card for your laptop....its called an IEEE 1394...at least for desktops, might be the same for lappys, get a 4 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. And the S-video on you camera will only export video...no audio, so you prolly dont wana go that route. PhreeZone 20 #4 December 9, 2005 There is no such thing as a USB to Firewire adapter. You need to get a Firewire port onto the laptop and then a firewire cable to go from the camera to the laptop. USB is for the stills on the memory stick and will not work for the video. FIREWIRE is for VIDEO - USB is for PHOTOS on the memory stick Avoid best Buy/Circuit City for this stuff. Sing by a Micro Center/Computer specific store and get help there. You should be able to get both parts for less then $40 and more realistically about $25. S-Video on the laptop is for video out only. Infact just about the only inputs on a laptop is the USB and the microphone jack. Get a PCMCIA firewire card and your issue is resloved.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

PhreeZone 20 #7 December 9, 2005 Typically a laptop has 1 or 2 slots to hold a PCMCIA card. At this point... find a local geek and get professional help And why do you need a computer to jump a camera? I only use one for my year end videos. PhreeZone 20 #11 December 10, 2005 For that price you can buy a Firewire card, a 4pin-4 pin 25 foot cable and a 4-pin to 6-pin cable and a jump or two USB2 is the only version of USB that is fast enough to capture DV video. Sony Camera's only have USB1.1 (or did up to the 330 series) and can not stream full quality video over USB1.1 . MAC's have Firewire built in, why use any other cable other then a fire wire cable to transfer to them? idrankwhat 0 #13 December 13, 2005 Speaking of prices, I just wanted to pass this one along. I needed a firewire capture card for my desktop. Went to Pricewatch.com and found this. http://www.acortech.com/.sc/ms/dd/1081989155763388/9/nc/Controller%20Cards--Firewire%20Card/569/4%20Ports%20IEEE%201394%20Card%20Firewire%20PCI%20CARD $12 total for the capture card with 4 ports, 4 pin to 6 pin cable, free shipping and some sort of video software that I haven't opened yet. Took about a week to get it. I couldn't even buy the cable alone for that price at Circuit City or Best buy!
