Who learnt to take pictures.....

Recommended Posts

Before slapping a stills camera on their head? A couple of posts recently made me wonder as well as the ability of some camera flyers i have seen. Do people rely too much on the electronics?

I learnt with a full manual camera, black and white film (that i developed myself!) and a lightmeter and greycard, thats not to say i use them now, :P but i know pretty much what all the main functions are for and how to use them.

What about you? were you a photographer first or did you pick it up as you went along?

Just curious! B|

Bought my 300D in February specifically with a view to jumping it. I put it on my head for first time two weeks ago and put a few thousands shots through it on the ground in the meantime. I remember speaking to you actually at the time actually about how I was buying in order to learn how to use an SLR before I tried to fly the thing.

I got some fantastic shots at a BBQ I had on Saturday night with a fully manual lens. I'm not willing to shell out for a fully auto lens just yet; after all I'm not getting paid to shoot, just doing it for fun. Therefore I have to learn how to use what I am willing to afford.

i got the interest through BASEjumping, now ive got myself (besides the standard 18-55mm)a 28-300mm and a 50mm Macro to start whith...

I found it fun to play whith this toy when weather aint for jumping(neither BASE or Skydive)which is a few times due a week arround here, and more in wintertime...

So i expect to learn all the things i need to know in the furture:P

For 10 years I shot a fully manual Nikon FM10. In hindsight, I regret every moment of it.

I've learned far more shooting digital in one year than I ever learned with my manual SLR.

Automatic cameras provide great tools to those who are interested in learning about them, and work pretty well anways when people don't care to learn.

If anyone wants my FM10, it's collecting dust in my closet. So far I can't even give it away.

Hey Stumpy,

So what if we do? There's more to taking skydiving pics than knowing what an f-stop is. You gotta be able to fly, too. (When you can do both, you're Norm Kent.) Your posts comes off a little holier-than-thou ... and your profile shows 200-ish jumps. Maybe I'm off-base, but what's your point?

Steady on - i was just curious on peoples opinions - there is no judgement involved whatsoever. I learnt to skydive by AFF - does that make me any less of a jumper than someone who did it the hard way via rounds and static line etc? (Edited to add - such as yourself guessing from your profile) Maybe, maybe not. I am not even intending to put a stills on my head for quite some time yet (doing too much 4-way!) - my interest in this forum is in the photography aspect of it thats all and thats what i was asking about!
If you have taken offence sorry, but don't take it out on me!!! :S

Steady on -

Actually, I'm not that old. Like I said, I might have been off-base, but it's hard to judge someone's tone from the written word. But since you started a new thread to call into question "the ability of some camera flyers" you have seen ... well, there seemed to be some judgement in that in spite of what you say. I'm still curious what your point is, though. You learn about photography by taking pics, and you learn about jumping by jumping. What difference does it make which hobby you start first? And what have you got against people who already jump trying to learn how to take pictures?

And as for saying. "I was just curious on peoples opinions" and "don't take it out on me" .. well, make up your mind.

[Edit]
I might have mis-read your first post as "A couple of posts recently made me wonder as TO the ability of some camera flyers i have seen".

I guess that changes things.. mea culpa.

Fair enough - i just hope i get to 11 years and 3000 jumps without doing any serious damage!!!

Good point - i guess i am just interested in how it does start. Steve sees himself as a skydiver who flies camera (and takes damn good pictures from what i have seen!). so i guess it doesn't matter!

In his defence, I think there is nothing more lame than the steady stream of "what settings do you use" type questions that show up here and in other places.

Especially with the digital SLR's, modern cameras are not hard to figure out.

I was lucky enough to have a buddy who did photography for a newspaper for years teach me about photography on the ground before i ever slapped a camera on my head. I spent months and thousands of shots on the ground shooting portraits, wildlife, and landscapes to learn how to get the shot that i want, not the shot that the camera wants.

Thanks to his training i was really able to come out of the gates with some great shots in the air and i was able to help out the other camera fliers at my dz improve their use of a camera as well. One was disappointed that sunset shots weren't turning out when shooting Tv 1/500 @ 100 ISO. Pretty easy to remedy once you know the basics, but i would have probably been in the same boat had i not gotten help from my buddy and the internet.
