BETO74 0 #1 August 31, 2005 Does anyone had any experience with motion2? is it a stand alone application? or requires Final Cut, is it compatible with FC 4.1??? I checked out in the apple store looks pretty wild. Thanks Carloshttp://web.mac.com/ac057a/iWeb/AC057A/H0M3.html
MB38 0 #2 August 31, 2005 It is a standalone application, available for $300. If you have FCP4, I'd recommend doing the "upgrade from FCP to Final Cut Studio" to save yourself money. You get all the cool new pro apps for a good price. That's if you can afford it. Motion, for what it is, is a remarkable application. It's not After Effects, because it doesn't want to be. It's just a kickass motion graphics/titling/stuff app.I really don't know what I'm talking about.
quade 4 #3 September 1, 2005 Motion is a really cool cheap program that requires a really cool expensive dongle (ie Dual Chip G5 Mac). It is NOT After Effects and should never even attempt substitute for After Effects, but that said, it makes a really cool interactive preview to kind of story board After Effects projects. Ok, that's totally unfair because it does -way- more than that, but it IS what I've mainly used it for; doing a quick, cheap and easy interactive thing with a producer to kind of get on the same page as to the type of thing we're looking for and then I go off and do a much higher level version in AE. Motion is very flat 2D with 3D being faked with scaling, whereas AE, well, does everything (and it costs a bunch more and so do all the plug-ins). The other thing I've used Motion for is to do -very- quick test blue screen composites; again as demos for the producers to kind of "prove" that something is or isn't going to basically work. The real time tweaking of the previews in Motion is really where the thing shines. That's not to say that I haven't used it for a whole lot of quick, cheap and easy projects as a finishing tool, but usually I need something with a bit more umph like AE and my collection of plugins in order to finish my higher end stuff. Still, you can do some mighty fine final product in Motion if the producer will by off on that look.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
BETO74 0 #4 September 2, 2005 Quade... do you think it will work on a powerbook G4 or requires the dual processor that the G5 has?? thankshttp://web.mac.com/ac057a/iWeb/AC057A/H0M3.html
quade 4 #5 September 2, 2005 Depends on what you mean by "work". The program will run and will be able to do a couple of layers in real time depending on what you're asking it to do. After you get a few layers in, the real-time frame rate will be pretty choppy. You will still be able to render the effects and output a file, but your RT previews and such will be pretty crappy. I use it that way quite a bit and I have a 2-year-old PowerBook G4 running at 1.25 Ghz. For the full whiz-bang previews, the faster and more powerful system you have the more layers you'll be able to see in real-time. If I could afford a fully pimped out system for myself I'd get one, but uh, right now I'm freelancing and I have this horrible habit of wanting to spend money on hamburgers. If I wanna do stuff on a pimped out G5, I gotta do it at a client facility.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
BETO74 0 #6 September 6, 2005 Yeah...I notice my Live type is choppy after so many layers but I can still work with it I have the same power book you described (G4 super drive 1.25), now off topic, since you brought the idea of the perfect set up what would you recommend???http://web.mac.com/ac057a/iWeb/AC057A/H0M3.html
MB38 0 #7 September 6, 2005 The "perfect" setup would always be the top of the line. The best thing to do is to buy all the Mac that you can afford [without buying RAM from Apple] and then add a few gigs of RAM.I really don't know what I'm talking about.
