Royal Lens - condensation between the inside of the lens and the camera lens?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else get this? Randomly i will either get a single drop of condensation that will just sit and wobble about in the middle of the back of the Royal Lens or, as yesterday, multiple small drops (like about a dozen) that just sit there and sort of get pulled about depending on my body position.

Does anyone else with a low profile/Royal lens get this at all? Is there any way to prevent what i think must be the condensation building up between the air that gets trapped inside the lens and the air outside? I don't use a camera condom but even so, would that help prevent condensation build up in the lens area? Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated.

this isn't a royal lens problem because it can and does happen to all sorts of lenses especially on humid days. it's sort of like putting a glass of cold water out in a warm humid room. there will be some moisture attrached to it. at least in the case of skydivers you could make sure to take the lens off the camera each day so that whatever humidity & temp levels are closer to equal on inside & out. then again it will change with altitude and weather upstairs. some people put the wide angle back on once they get their in plane shots. for some it works others it doesn't.

however i've seen a product called "cat crap" work for fog or condensation on ski goggles & glasses. some people at my dz ordered some, but i haven't heard how it worked yet.

thanks, i didn't think this was an issue specific to Royal Lenses, but because thats what i use i thought i would ask to see if any other customers had similar issues. I have never come across this before, so was wondering if anyone had any general solutions. "Cat crap" aside from being a hilarious name for a product, sounds interesting - would be great to hear if/how it works when you get a report back yourself.
In the meanwhile, i think i will just take the lens off and clean the inside at least at the start of each day in the hope of "equalising" the air inside.

I get a little mist in the center of my royal 0.2 lens.
It usually condenses at 9,000' on the way down, but evaporates shortly after opening.
... did not have this problem with my royal 0.3 lens.
Max Cohn attributed the problem to poor quality control on the first batch of 0.2 lenses, so he gave me a replacement 0.2 lens from the second batch, but it still has the condensation problem.
I compensate by rarely pointing the lens directly at the student's face, always trying to get the student's face slightly off center.

is the .02 a single element lens or does it have multiple pieces of glass that make it up? or was the coating on the glass the problem?
because i can't imagine how a single element's quality control would cause condensation problems. (i've never had condensation inside the sealed portion of any of the lenses i've used, but rather in the space between the lens & the filters i put on for protection.)
