Something to think about ....

Taken from the BPA's STC meeting minutes

iv) There had been 33 reports of Malfunction/Deployment Problems to Intermediate or Experienced Parachutists since the last meeting. 25 male and 8 female.

The CCI was able to give details of one jumper who pulled their dive loops instead of steering toggles because the dive loops were yellow. The CCI believed that incident was one to be aware of.

Thissort of thing has happened before...

There was a fatality a while ago in Australia where a student pulled their SOS handle just enough to disengage the main, but not to deploy the reserve.

The student was told to use the 'yellow' toggles to steer the parachute. The SOS handle is also yellow. The investigation concluded that the student confused the SOS handle and the toggles, and pulled the hande, thinking that it would steer the parachute.

Now, all student rigs must have blue toggles.

Excuse me for saying this, but some people should not skydive and/or some people should not give first jump coarses.
>:(

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Yup!
Some people should never be allowed to skydive on their own.
The summer I taught at Skydive Long Island, out of 1,000 first jump students, only one noticed the yellow RSL - Velcroed down to lay near his collar. He pulled it at about 1500 feet.
Main steering toggles were also yellow.

Maybe it doesn't need to be said, but....you must be capable of thinking to be able to skydive, right?:S
Isn't there a little bit of difference in the tension of a dive loop and a toggle? Did this person try to flare with the dive loops as well?B|

Sounds like a canidate for the dreaded "flapping noise" malfunction. I've seen someone chop since they did'nt remember the slider flapping on their tandems and it was doing it on their solo. They thought something ripped and thats what was flapping.

turned up at a dz about 2 hours after this had happened to a first time student. she was told the slider would come down. but it started to flap and make noises and she didn't know what to do, so she chopped it and the same thing happened on the reserve :S

i dont really get it...someone with more than one jump grabbed the front risers (dive loops) and tried to flare with them??? and didnt know that they were on the front??? I guess its possible, but whoever taught that student either should have their rating yanked... if they cant tell the difference then they shouldnt jump..if the instructor didnt tell them the difference he shouldnt instruct..

2 cents coming here....

When I was on student gear, there were no dive loops on the front risers (IIRC...).

When I rented the Spectre for the first time, all of a sudden there were 2 groups of yellow things - one on each set of risers. Upon closer look, I figured it out, and was fine. I was tooling around at something like 4000 feet at the time.

I do understand how it can happen...but what I don't understand is how it could happen low to the ground if you've performed a canopy control check UP HIGH like you're supposed to...

This also happened to me at around 11 jumps. My first thought was "cool more stuff to play with ....Yahoo!" Glen

And therein, friends and neighbors, lies the base difference between me and Glen...;)

My first thought was "WTF are they? I am sooooooooooo not touching it..."...a little looking, a little logic (those "string thingies" were a dead giveaway...) and I was fine...
