Camcorder for skydiving

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to buy a camcorder for skydiving. I don't know much when it comes to camcorders so figured I'd ask you guys for some advice.

Most people have recommended Sony's as they are reliable and sturdy. Then they've recommended either the PC107 or PC109. It has been highlighted that they require a docking station to firewire footage. Does this cause any of you too much hassle or do the advantages far out weigh this disadvantage?

Thanks!

Don't put off 'till tomorrow what you can do today

I have a 109 and i must say that the docking station hasn't caused me all that much trouble. In fact i kind of like the way the camera looks when it sits in the station on top of a TV or wherever i've left it to charge.
The station weighs almost nothing and I just keep it together with my cables in one of my gear bags so they're there when i need 'em. Just my 2 cents :)

i got a pc105 a couple of months ago. I love it. Just need to get a Wide angle lens. I have used it on motorcycle rides and look forward to getting a skydiving helmet to mout it to once i get training out of the way.

It's my understanding Sonys have an image stabilization system that is more capable for skydiving than any other brand.

You understand incorrectly. Image stabilization is great for the ground, horrible for the air. The camera can vibrate so much that the image stabilization can't keep up and over-corrects.

I've never had a problem Sony's image stabilization - "Steady-Shot".

I've only heard of image stabilzation problems when people were mis-diagnosing the "floating iris" problem with older 3-chip Sony TRV cameras.

I always use Sony Steady-Shot with good results.

well i know that on a vibrating motorcycle there are no problems with vibration effecting the camera's output. I could take some of the fotage off the camera and host it if its ok to link to videos on this forum.
