NEW FTN came in today!

Recommended Posts

Very cool, except for that big swivel clamp. It is definitey a snag hazard. I would recommend a Shumacher swivel clamp that is adjusted with an allen key. It will make your setup that much cleaner/safer, and they are pretty inexpensive.

A very nice setup, nonetheless.

I have that -- but I find it way to hard to adjust easily -- that is why I went with my old swivel knob.

Do yourself a favor and spend an hour or two testing the concept of mounting all the hardware inside the FTN's warehouse like insides.

If you go verticaly up from where the site sits outside the helmet, and run the site shaft down from the inside of the helmet, the FT's inside "skull cap" will keep it free of pressure from your head. It has the added benefit of putting the site right over yor eye, and keeping it well out of the tandem master/passenger kick zone.

YMMV.

I did this with mine. I will post some pics of it later, but they are not on the same computer I am using today.

#$%&* -- the flash popped up when I took a picture in the plane and I did not realize it would show in video! I looked at moving the camera as far forward as possible and with the wide angle lens, it still shows. I could raise the D box and move it forward -- don't want to do that. It was suggested to flip the "L" bracket and hang the still camera (digital rebel) upside down -- I don't want to do that either. My best guess is I should tape down the flash and add a separate flash. But since I'm the only vidiot at our small DZ I have no one to bounce this idea off or which flash I should buy or how to set it up. I will do a search on this forum for some info, but if anyone has some advice I'd appreciate a PM. After spending $645 on a FTN I need a cheaper one -- anybody got a used one? What is your favorite brand and what should I look for?

Drill another hole in the L-Bracket and move the whole SLR down about 1/2" - Looks like you have plenty of room to drop it down.

D'oh, see that is why you need to come back down here.:D

I had the same problem with my FTP, I had my PC120 top mounted and my digiRebel on the L-bracket. Not only would I get the flash, but when I switched to the Sigma 15 lens I'd also get its tip.

My solution was to rotate the "L" bracket and hang it upside down. That worked fine when I was shooting film but quickly became a pain in the ass when I switched to digital because I coulnd't find an editing program that would rotate the images in bulk. I recently did find that program... www.picasa.com.

A few weeks ago I dropped in on Bonehead and had them custom make me a larger top-plate for my FTP. Now I can mount my digiRebel beside my dbox'ed PC120, and have completely avoided the issue. As an added bonus, this frees up the "L" bracket for a good flash...

I suspect that if you tape down the flash and add a second one, well - you'll still have the same problem except it'll be the wiring harness for your new flash that shows up in frame...

That is one reason why I dislike the FTN.

Maybe Bonehead would be willing to help you trade in for a FTP.

Alternately, you can go inverted or move the "L" bracket down.

I would love to do this, but the picture sizes exceed max attachment size. Can anyone help me out? A computer guru I am not.

Someone suggested this and I downloaded it last week.

This is a resize program from Microsoft and it is free. After getting the download and install, just right click on the image, there will be an option for resizing. You specify the size you want (maybe 4X6) and a new image will be placed in your pictures folder with a "small" in the new name.

Cheap and easy.

Edited to make "clicky" work.

Cool. Thanks. I'll try that-- just as soon as I get back to the computer that has the pics on it. ;)

You should never have to re-adjust your site .It will be rock solid once you have it set crank it down with an allen wrench .And get some one to cut that post off to proper length once you have your sites where you want them .I have a machinist cut mine in a lathe .....

Thanks, Mike. I lowerd the L bracket a half inch and moved the D box forward 1 inch -- whala! No more problem! Thanks for all the advice.
