Cheaper digital still camera

Recommended Posts

I was looking for a cheap alternative to a Canon digital Rebel. I know that there has been a few short post about Sony DSC-V1. I purchased one on e-bay for about $240.00 and the remote switch for $45(which is a LANC controller). The DSC-V1 is a 5 mega pixel camera that has been replaced by DSC-V3 which is a 7 mega pixel camera. Anyway, I thought I would give my opinion of the camera. I have only one jump with it but I was able to shoot over 22 pictures in a 50 second skydive. I could have taken a few more pictures if I wanted to so I think as far as speed of picture taking I would say it would be adequate. I did modify the Lanc remote so I could use it as a tongue switch. So far I am very happy with this camera. I also find that the camera has a fairly wide angle on the pics, I have a Sony PC105 witha .5 Wide angle lens and the DSC-V1 has a wider angle lens on it.

The 34mm is without the .5 conversion lens... the camera works OK... I have one and have used it as a second camera on my helmet... I wouldn't give up my D60 for it, but for a low cost entry into digital it can get the job done... I even got a cover shot out of mineB|

I'd be more worried about getting laughed at!

Yeah.. cause with a camera like that you can't get good shots right? :S

There's a guy at my home dz that gets the most amazing shots using a camera similar to that... it's not the camera that gets the best picture.

IN your 4th pic, you get the lens of another camera in the shot, but in your first pic (the one of your helmet setup), I don't see it possible to capture a lens in the frame......what gives?

and they are probably laughing behind your back...ok, just kidding. I know Kirk, and for me, it's all about giving him shit.
my pics & stuff!

... Fair question..:|. here's the answer :)
That shot was the very first tandem jump where i used the V 1...:)B|:D . The V 1 was top mounted for that shot....on the left side of a wide base,, thus the view which we see... B| The picture of my helmet which is posted , is after the Sony camera was moved to the front of the helmet
... Over the years I have varied the cameras and sometimes their locations,,,, sorry for the puzzlement it caused you...:D:)I may have a picture of both still cameras on the helmet at the same time , along with 2 video cams.. :S:P:S
I'll look in the Archives !!!B| My avatar shows the lens which we see in that tandem photo... I have been pleased with the colors and with the images from this camera,, although I am leaning towards Nikon D70s.. sometime soon...( I guess when they come available )

As for the helmet yes it might be a bit silly,,, so that's why I added the altimeter....:D:P:)Today... that very same altimeter skydives without me,,,, riding on the wrist of a good friend of mine...

The Vx 1000 is what makes that helmet seems too much,,, but it's balanced, it's a workhorse, it's 3chip and it documents skydives quite reliably side by side with a dcr trv 27...the 27 has a wide angle the vx doesn't ...The Vx also has a great carrying handle ;) but I'd swap it out for the Nikon in a flash,, and lighten the weight of the whole thing at the same time. ( I'm not getting any younger:ph34r: ).

as far as the helmet goes that looks like a fun one. REALLY

kinda funny to see the alti on it but thats cool at the same time!:D

question for us poor vidiots looking to get into the digital realm..

I am jumping an ELPH b/c its tiny and I dont need to drag a laptop and a printer up to the dz to give the pictures to the students etc.

(but...my birthday is coming up and I have some cash)

the sony doesn't look much bigger then the elph is anyone familiar with both cams? how does the size match up?
for the CAM AND LENS' how much (generally speaking) would you say I am looking into spending to strap one on?

( i know I would need a bunch of periphials etc. Im just looking right now. I dont do enough WORK to even attempt to explain it to myself that way but I was never in it for the money anyway)

Here are the overall dimensions of the V1 (W/H/D): 3 15/16" x 2 9/16" x 2 1/5" (99 x 65.2 x 56.9 mm).
As far as cost you can pick the camera up on e-bay for $200 to $300 a memory stick depending on size around $90 and lens between $60 to $100 and lastly the LANC remote $45. This option may not be completely cheap but a hell of alot cheaper than a Canon digital rebel

The Digital Rebels have been selling used online for about the same price as you just quoted. I've seen 2 or 3 go on Ebay with the kit lens for less then $500 in the last 2 weeks since the XT was released.

I am sure that is true, yet by the time you buy the camera and add memory your still $100 - $250 cheaper depending on everything.
As I stated in my first post I only have one jump on it but so far I see no need for the wide angle lens for the V1 since it still has a wider angle of view than my PC105 with a .5 wide angle lens. Total into my camera with 3 batteries and 512MB memory and switch is $427

I went on e-bay to check those prices of Canon Rebel most are still going for over $600 plus. I did see one 5 hours for close at $566 but we all know that price will move before it closes so I still see a $250 plus differance between these two. On top of most of those Canons will need more memory and spare batterys so if you look ast base cost of each mine ran $261 without the memory upgrade and extra batterys compared to the $600 plus the canon is going for.
