nacmacfeegle 0 #2 March 15, 2005 "what size teli will I need ?" Large, probably something with mirrors and a high price tag. If she's doing a tandem, she will be a mile away from you on opening, doing a normal skydive she will be 3000ft or about half a mile away at opening time. Its quite difficult to track the subject using 'normal camera gear' from the ground. "what can I expect in the way of quality from these pics?" Depends how much you spend on the large tele. Much better to spend your money on a local camera flier who will get good shots for you.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. AndyMan 7 #3 March 15, 2005 This one might work, along with a 2x teleconverter. No guarantees, though. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=248293&is=GREY On exit, expect your wife to be 2.5 miles up, and probably offset another mile away from the dropzone. It does seem like a far wiser choice to simply pay for a photo and video guy on your wife's tandem. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. psw097 0 #4 March 15, 2005 There is a Sigma 300-800 for Nikon AF plus a 2x APO teleconverter would get 1600mm - That setup only runs around 5 grand.

Squeak 17 #6 March 16, 2005 From those distances you maybe better off getting a telescope with a camera adaptor. You'll also need a tripod and the ability to tilt and pan really well. All up I'd say it probably a lot more trouble than it's worth and the quality of pic is going to ordinary at bestYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! AndyMan 7 #7 March 16, 2005 Quote wife not tandum a license Ooops. Sorry. You should be able to get some pretty good shots of her under canopy and landing, using an inexpensive 200mm or 300 mm lens. For anything in freefall, having a cameraman go with her for the jump is definately the way to go. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. cameramonkey 0 #8 March 16, 2005 Agreed... If she's an A, most vidiots will do raw footage for a jump ticket and the cost of the film (if film is shot vs digital) Worst case, it'll cost you an extra $20 on top of the jump tix... (students are a different matter, and likely will be charged standard rates, but still MUCH less than the equipment you'll need to do it right from the ground) IMHO, if her local DZ vidiots wont shoot it for less than the jump ticket and a beer, they arent very freindly, and I would suggest finding another DZ. I could be wrong, thats just how our vibe is. *edited to add: Of course this assumes vidiot availability... My(negative) assumption was that the vidiots are available, yet unwilling. dragon2 2 #9 March 16, 2005 Maybe you can get a camera guy to do it for the ticket, maybe not. Remember that they may be losing money that way because they're missing out on paid tandem videos etc. I don't think it's fair to assume they should do it for just the ticket. If they do, cool, but not everyone does. That said, I'd do it ciel bleu, Saskia
