nacmacfeegle 0 #2 January 20, 2005 Okay, I've been looking into this recently, you probably want to get a 'multi-region' model, so your DVDs can be played anywhere (think tourists), and that it is capable of writing both DVD-R and DVD+R. PAL and NTSC is an issue you may have to examine. Next Q is whether the unit will hang off a PC or whether it is to be operated like a VCR. Assuming it is the latter, I'm seriously considering getting a Sony RDR GX700 for home use, all I'm waiting for is the price to drop below 300 quid. I like firewire, this machine has it, but not all do, so you may have to look at this aspect, I don't now if thats a biggie to you. Another thing to consider (which isn't a consideration for me) is that some models come with a built in hard drive, so you could keep stock footage/leaders etc on the HD to aid your video production. Although the same thing could be done with standard Minidv footage, its just a bit of a scutter.. If your machine is to hang off a PC editing system, I'd recommend the Sony DRX-710UL, I got one recently and have been mighty impressed by it, I haven't made any beer mats with it yet.Wanaka is nice, I envy you, I'll have to visit when I'm down your way, next time I come to see my sister in Clyde.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Pendejo 0 #3 January 20, 2005 I bought a Phillips DVD-R615 about 7 months ago for our video concession. The finalize time is good (for price range), It will do +R and -R DVDS. So for it has been great to use. It has firewire, "S", and RCA connections. I think they sell for around $250.00. I bought mine from B&H supply for $220.00 plus shipping. The only complaint I have is that to title a DVD you have to use the remote (takes to long and is a pain in the ass). Other than that its been great for us.
