AiRpollUtiOn 0 #1 October 30, 2004 I just bought a new second-hand javelin because my rigger told me my old container was not going to pass its next yearly check. The vertical webbing just underneath the reserve / cutaway handles was showing a lot of wear. Now last year that wasn't there, I'm 1000% sure. I started jumping a camera-suit this year (4-way and tandem) and I think the problem propably came due to friction between the wings and the webbing. Has anyone had this problem, and what can I do to minimalize this?"Don't make me come down there" - God. jimoke 0 #2 October 30, 2004 what is on your suit at that location? I am envisioning the junction of your wing to the suit, and this is where you tuck the wing behind the main lift web. something on your suit is rubbing causing wear? if you could post a close-up picture we might be able to help figure out a cure. The ground always, remembers where you are! quade 4 #3 October 30, 2004 Well, I have a few camera jumps and I've never noticed any wear on my rig, but I've noticed that my rigs wear pretty badly on my camera suits. Mostly it's my laterals that seem to saw the wings a bit. How many camera jumps to you have and is your camera suit made out of sandpaper?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Yep there also is wear on my camerasuit, but that's about 200 euro's, a container between 1500 and 2000... The laterals are doing that job for me as well, had to have it patched up last week with only 140 jumps on the suit. I did about 120 jumps on the container/camsuit combination. In total I have about 250 camerajumps up to now. (doubt the relevance but posting anyway). To explain more detailed, it seemed like something was slowly eating away the webbing, in some places already ate away the yellow line. This is the reason why my rigger told me to classify it vertically. Would it be OK to twist some gaffa's tape around the spot that has the most friction, or would that bring along other potential bad stuff? Can't post pictures of the wear on the container because the garbage-truck already took it!"Don't make me come down there" - God. ltdiver 3 #6 October 31, 2004 Just a thought. Do you use a packer between jumps? And if so, do they drag it across the ground when stowing lines? ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
riggerrob 643 #7 October 31, 2004 Would it be OK to twist some gaffa's tape around the spot that has the most friction, or would that bring along other potential bad stuff? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gaffer's tape is a bad idea because the adhesive will hold sand and grit, accelerating wear. Better to ask your local Master Rigger to sew a sacrificial layer of webbing over the wear points - on you new rig.

If you really look at most rigs they bend at that exact point alot. Next time you get in the plane take a look around you, you will see most all containers flex at that point, Javelins have sewn the two thickness of webbing together which makes it harder to flex but will IMO will wear more over time. Infinity has choosen not to sew the webbing together there so it would be easier to flex and over time be less wear right there IMO. Wings containers build their hip ring right under the reserve and cutaway handles basicaly taking out that wear point. IMO I would say it has little to due with flying camera and alot to due with how many jumps are on the container and how much it flexs right there. AiRpollUtiOn 0 #9 November 1, 2004 Mostly I'm packing myself, and the packer I hire doesn't slide my container either. Good point on the gaffa's tape, very bad idea. I am thinking of having my rigger making sort of a cover for that part of the harness though. Jumped the new Javelin this weekend, actually I'm not so sad anymore that my old one is in the trash"Don't make me come down there" - God.
