Jethers203 0 #1 April 14, 2003 I have a friend who has a total of 190 jumps. He has pretty shitty gear and wants to buy something new/new to him. He has made a total of 2 jumps on a parachute smaller than a 170 and they were on a Spectre 150. The gear he recently found and bought included a used Stiletto 150 that has had 1100 jumps made on it and was relined a couple hundred jumps ago. He knows that it won't last too much longer, but he is planning on making thirty or so jumps on it before he gets a new parachute. Do you all think it is a wise move for him to make these jumps with no prior experience on such a canopy? I think that moving from a PD 170 (not even semi-eliptical) to a Stiletto 150 (fully elliptical + 1100 jumps on it) is not a wise thing to do. Let me know what you all think!!!!! skybytch 273 #2 April 14, 2003 This is one of those "he'd probably be okay, BUT" kind of questions. . . Personally, I'd agree with you. If he were looking at putting 30-50 jumps on a Sabre/Sabre2/Hornet/Safire 150 then going to the Stiletto it'd be a different story. Kinda depends on how he's been flying the PD170 too. It's easy to get away with lazy flares and still get decent landings on those; not so easy to get away with the same on a Stiletto.
Kris 0 #3 April 14, 2003 If the Stiletto has been recently relined, and the canopy has been reasonably well taken care of, there is no reason why it wouldn't be a good canopy with a couple of thousand jumps left to give. I've seen a Sabre with over 3K jumps on it and it looked almost new except for the labels and dingy trim tape on the nose. Now, it being a good canopy for his experience level, that's a different story. This would give him a better idea of what to expect from HP landings. As far as: QuoteKinda depends on how he's been flying the PD170 too. Line twists etc. He claimed it to be because of the number of jumps on the PD 170 (like 800 or so). I didn't really believe that. The whole situation just sounds sketchy!!!!! Experience matters!!!!! He could be right, especially if the lineset has 800 jumps on it. Around here people seem to love their F-111 but it seems in the 400 jump area the canopies are loosing thier *umpf*. Flare barely stops the forward movement and doesn't really stop the downward movement. So try and talk him into demoing a sabre2 150 for a few weekends, then he would get a feel for the "PD flare" and if he really is haveing problems with his body possition on opening, it would come out on a canopy that won't bite him in the tush.Fly it like you stole it! Jethers203 0 #6 April 14, 2003 Thank you!!!!! That is exactly what I told him!!!!! I jump a Sabre 2 150 and I have already offered to let him jump it. I am sure he will like it better then anything he has ever experienced. Well, the Spectre's atleast.
