edit of bad tandem vid

Recommended Posts

Hey guys
i videoed a guy getting his first tandem, nothing usual in that event, however in the landing he breaks his foot...[:/]
Now im not current on video tandems and only did becours the video guys were out and i were the only at that point that could video it..
I got a great vid for him,but are wondering what you guys are doing as you make a vid were the end aint as good as it should be(he couldnt walk arround smiling you know)..

He did like the jump and most likely want another one which i has offered to video for free(to complete his vid, plus his a father of 2 skydivers i know:P),but how would you stop an video were a tandem gets hurt in the end???[:/]

Thats a tough one.... either break it before he breaks it......-lol-......sorry B| and finish before the impact/arrival ....or..........show it all, but I would keep the music going to cover up the groanings and sounds of acute distress.......... Ask him, whatever he wants, is what he should get, if he is fine with all his friends and family seeing him get hurt then give that as the finished product,........not the best for advertisement for our sport, but remember..... its HIS video.....

Tell him the battery died right before he landed...or something similar. It may be his video, but videos help promote the sport. Skydiving has a bad enough image as it is. Leave the bad videos to RealTV.

Just end the video with the shot of the canopy flying through the air in the distance and fade to black.

Or wait untill the guy comes back to the dropzone to pick up his tape, and film an ending there (too bad it didn't go 100% perfect, but we hope you had a great time!!)

Because no matter what ending you put on tape, he'll be telling the story to everyone who's seeing it....and just being friendly and open about it (without showing the actual landing) would probably be better then ignoring it all together and coming up with some BS story on how 'my battery died'

I agree with most of the people here, don't show the "bad part" of the skydive.

This weekend I filmed a tandem where the passenger got sick on the ground.. I walked away and filmed his wife landing instead of him puking his guts out. It's just no fun and it doesn't belong on the video.
Afterwards he asked me if I did get it, and was kind of disappointed.. but I'm sure he'll be happy it's not on there when he shows his buddies.

Show the bright side of it all, specially if someone gets hurt.. try to get that out of the video that goes home with the customer.

The customer is always right.

No they are not. A tandem student who walks up to me smelling of alchohol doesn't jump.

Likewise a truely bad AFF video with a student totaly out of control, and the jumpmasters having to save his ass doesn't get dubbed. The customer gets a refund because we had an "equipment failure".

As for the situation described above? Well it's easy to editi it right on the ground. Langing goes bad? Shut the camera off.....

if its only the landing we are missing its not a big deal I will edit it out.

On someone getting hurt I would edit it out, no questions asked.

Ask your dz manager, chief instructor or ST&A for any policies or how they want to deal with it. IF none then use your best judgement.

Correct. That's why he's not a customer.

Agreed. If you're an independant contractor, and you're working directly for the student, not representing, represented by, or brokered by the DZ or school, then yes the customers voice rules.

Otherwise your employer has the final say about what product goes out.

Then Faber should be asking his employer, not us.

However, the question was posted here. Presumably he was looking for our opinion, not that of his employer.

Stefan,

Easy solution: make two versions for this poor guy. Then he can select what he want to show.

To edit the accident clip is no real solution. And otherwise the story will grow each time he tells the story...

I would add something nice to the bad landing tape (or the other tape as well) e.g. record best wishes from all people of your dropzone. Cheers from the whole bunch or individuals at least from the staff TM, Videot, Manifestors... but pretty girls or boys will do also ;-)

This is what I do on all tandem videos, might work here if you edit out the break at the landing and then put it in the complete jump at the end.

1) PROMO (1 1/2 minutes)
2) PREP BEFORE JUMP
3) AIRPLANE SHOTS
4) JUMP WITH MUSIC (edited -- TAKE OUT MY OPENING ETC.)
5) LANDING
6) SLOW MO OF JUMP WITH MORE MUSIC
7) COMPLETE JUMP FROM DOOR OPENING TO END OF TAPE W/O EDITING
8) CLOSING CREDITS

Bloopers section.

Or get someone who looks nothing like him to fill in as a stunt double.

Copy the ending of someone else's and whenever they say the person's name, dub over it with the correct one.

In a case like that I would give the DZO the first say, because after all, he is the one who made the person sign the waiver in the first place. If you give that person a copy of the video it may be used in a criminal trial as a form of evidence. Of course the waiver should take care of this, but it is up to the DZO to decide what they feel is best. I also feel that the video is your property just as much as the person who paid you to shoot it, so in a way it is up to their discression. If the DZO says its ok, then make sure with them that its cool that you put in on their video. If they say yes, then I say go for it.

Any opinions?

Hi guys
im on a UK trip at this point so thats why i didnt answereed before now, sorry.

I think its a great discuss we got here:)
I did deside to make 2 copyes and let him deside whih one he like most...
heres my reassons:

he is a father to 2 jumpers(who were on the flight were he were aswell),i dont think his blaming the sport but acsepted the risk,he didnt looked angry about it as he left.

It were a nil wind landing, the TM overshoot the landing area just abit and sadly landed in a grassfeild,so you can only see them tumble, and no screams what so ever.

I got some smiles on his face as we got back, which i videoed,at that point we thourght it were the hand landing making him feel sore.We surgested him to get it cheked out,and at that point by all suprise it were broken(there were a doc at the dz that looked at him,who said it didnt looked like a broken bone)

I would never lie to any inkluding people like this, they trust us by their lives and were sopoused to make a lie??well i wont..(i think that will harm the sport more than anything else..but that just me.

again thanks for the inputs:)
