Water damaged PC9 Help!

Recommended Posts

So i finally did it....got my Sony PC9 pretty wet. It seems to have problems, wide too telephoto not working, turning on when switch is in off position, crazy software stuff. I got the camera open on its own, and am letting it air out. I suspect I will have to send it in to be repaired...any suggestions, past experiences, ideas? And what is the best place to have it service? Thanks.

Cajones took his 101 in the New River a couple years ago...

It is possible to save electronics when they get wet. Although in your case it is probably too late. Anytime electronics get wet, immidiately take the batteries out or disconnect the power supply. Leaving them in causes it to short itself and potentially ruin it for good. Then open it up as much as possible. On a video camera, taking the plastic shell off... And gently rinse the entire thing with distilled water. Let it air dry for a day in a place that is as dustfree as possible. Repeat. Once it's completely air dried the second time, you can try putting the batteries back on and testing it. If you tried to turn it on and use it right after it got wet, you probably ruined it. You can still try rinsing it with distilled water, but don't get your hopes up. The sony service centers are the only place to have it fixed. You can find that info on their website somewhere. Basically, you ship it to them. It's a minimum of $289ish for any repair, and possible more depending on what's wrong with it, and it takes 6-8 weeks. They will call you before they fix it with the estimate.

edit to add: I saved one of my 7th graders $2000 laptop this way. She spilled sprite all over the keyboard, thought her parents were going to kill her (which they would have had they known)... We took the battery out, rinsed it with distilled and let it dry upside down, opened up. She was so lucky!

I sent in a PC105 that was stuck on nightshot, they called and said it would be $1200 to fix... so I had them just send it back to me. Anyone got use for a strictly night shot video camera?

Also, I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but Ritz's ESP would be cheaper than the one time repair fee from Sony, and you're covered no matter how badly you break it or how many times.

good luck, let us know how it works out!

peace

Dang, Lew-- $1200? How long ago?

I recently sent my PC110 into Sony for repairs. They told me it would be flat rate of $289 (or something close to that) for any and all repairs that my camera needed in order to bring it back to factory specs. I sent it in because the remote sensor died (again.) They fixed that, replaced another circuit board, gave it a good clean and lube, and even replaced the door on my LCD screen that got bashed in by a riser strike last season. Granted, it wasn't water damaged...but they had it back to me in less than 2 weeks.

To the original poster, you might want to atleast check out the flat-rate repair. $300 for a repair is still cheaper than a new camera... Maybe they cover water damage differently?

What Lew said, but once its dry, find the wee reset hole and poke a paperclip in to reset everything.
Sometimes this frees up 'locked' or badly behaving cameras.
I doubt if it will help in this instance, but you never know.

I think that if you call the Sony Service #, they have you send it to the one closest to you, and (hopefully) the pricing and repair policies are consistent across the county. (1-800-222-SONY)

Just for the record, though, mine went to Sony Service Center, 1501 Grundy Lane, Bristol, PA 19007. If I'm looking at the paperwork correctly, their # should be 1800-282-2848. Either way, I think that you have to call first so that they put you in the system and give you an "E-number". The grand total for flat rate repairs was $286.99-- that included everything except what I spent to send my camera to them.

Good luck!:)

I personally took my PC-5 down to the factory service center in rancho bernardo. For newer gear they rate the cost of the repair by each item that needs attention. On older gear ( I don't know how old ) its a flat rate. I dropped it off before noon and fed ex emailed me that it was in their system before noon the next day. I had the camera back in two working days total.

hey thanks to all of you! having given the camera good time to dry out, it seems that it is just the telephoto that is not fuctioning, so i may be in luck for that flat rate fix. thanks again! j
