AndyMan 7 #1 April 30, 2004 I'm as guilty as the next on choosing Windows Media as the codec of choice, largely because of its common acceptance. I'm THRILLED to see the development of an open source video codec. Surprisingly, its comming from the BBC. From Slashdot: "Need To Know this week has a piece about Dirac, a BBC R&D project to produce a video codec, which has been released as an Open Source project. From BBCi: 'Dirac is a general-purpose video codec aimed at resolutions from QCIF (180x144) to HDTV (1920x1080) progressive or interlaced... Our algorithm seems to give a two-fold reduction in bit rate over MPEG-2 for high definition video (e.g. 1920x1080 pixels), its original target application. It has been further developed to optimise it for internet streaming resolutions.'" I hope we'll see integration into Media Player and Premiere. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. slayer21016 2 #2 May 1, 2004 Hey AndyMan The whole video codec wars around the world really cracks me up. The my codec is better than your codec (sounds like this forum sometimes Huh!) is the problem I think, instead of the major providers MS, Real and Apple working together like they promised to do they point fingers at each other going "your a Dick no your a Dick" sounding like Terance&Philip farting at each other instead of giving each other permission to add there codecs (Ram,Wma and Mov) to the others players, then allow us the end users to pick/use the player we want. Apple and Real would be the real losers here, I use QT but I would like to play Windows Media and Real Media in my QT player if thatÕs the format that someone else wants to use. And the recent legal ruling against Microsoft (UK) that does not allow them to bundle there player may be a start to getting this done?. At least Apple and Real have added the MPEG-4 codec to there players but Microsoft still hasn't like they promised several years ago, bill gates just can't seem to get on the bus with this cross platform use of codecs and he reminds me of the person with there hands over there ears humming "I can't hear you I can't hear you" to all of the content providers out there who are complaining to Microsoft to drop the proprietary crap and let them in. This is going to be going on for a long time and with more folks coming up with new codecs it can only get worse. *These are my opinions and my opinions only and are subject to change if you can find me and beat me with a dead hamster* Blue Ones Scott
