kevin922 0 #1 April 27, 2004 Has anyone hacked their 300d firmware? There is a russian hack out there that will enable a bunch of features that don't come out of the box, making it more like a 10d...
psw097 0 #2 April 27, 2004 Yes, with one of the origianl hacks - the blinking red-eye light annoyed the crap out of me so I went back to the original. I recently downloaded the FEC hack but have not got to loading it yet. I've heard it works without any issues and no blinknig red-eye.

I would be interested to know what will be enabled. Iwan
psw097 0 #6 April 27, 2004 Don't know, it was part of the original hack. The latest one does not have that problem and unlocks several very cool features of the 10D. If the Russian guy figures out selectable autofocus modes, it'll be a silver 10D with a smaller buffer and $500 cheaper.
psw097 0 #7 April 29, 2004 Just put in the newest Russian firmware hack. It unlocked the 10D custom functions and serveral appear to work fine. The 3 biggest for me are FEC, selectable RAW + JPG and no shutter realease without CF card. FEC - I have a 420EX flash without manual control adding FEC is very cool I shoot a lot of RAW when not jumping and that saves a load of CF card space to select RAW + small. Some of the other functions work, but those 3 are all I cared about. The camera is running stable, the only worry I can see is if it crashed for some other reason and wouldn't boot far enough to flash the Canon software back in. They may not want to fix it at that point.

psw097 0 #9 April 30, 2004 The camera embeds a JPG file when you shoot RAW. You can extract the embedded file with the Canon software. The 300D does not give you an option as to what size file it is - its always Medium/fine. The custom functions left over from the 10D firmware they made the 300D firmware from allows you to select any other size. The smaller size you pick the less space the RAW file takes on the CF card and the more shots you get. Since I use C1 for my RAW file conversion tool the embedded file is useless to me so being able to pick Small/reg saves me a Meg per shot - like 10 more shots for a 512MB CF card. 10 shots come in handy when hiking for an afternoon. The Russian firmware hack just turns on the custom functions menu that was already there. The 10D user manual can tell you the specifics. I didn't mention: If you don't shoot RAW its pointless and the camera is not really fast enough to shoot RAW for skydiving.
