TimHurford 0 #1 April 22, 2004 The Sigma 15mm has a built in hood (see pic), and comes with a barrel that slips over the hood - the barrel is held on with friction and is threaded for filters (and attaching the lens cap ). On a normal (ie film) camera, the AoV would be so wide that you couldn't leave the the barrel on without getting severe vignetting, although wouldn't be the case with a 300D with the 1.6x magnification. From what I understand, the hood isn't removble - is this right? Are flyers out there flying with the barrel attached or as is with the hood - is there any drag from the barrel/hood? Has anyone tried flyign with filters on the barrel?
lewmonst 0 #2 April 22, 2004 i've jumped it with the hood, no problem. never tried filters. i need a new Sigma 15mm though, so if you know of anyone not needing one anymore... I lost mine in the fire, no warranty or anything on the lense. peace lewhttp://www.exitshot.com
jdhill 0 #3 April 22, 2004 The hood is not removable... there is some vignetting with the barrel, but if your subject is less than a full frame, it is not much of an issue... I have not jumped with barrel, but it fits on fairly snug, so it should be doable... The hood itself does not cause any problems, or noticeable drag. XDV 0 #4 April 22, 2004 I jump the 15mm Sigma with my 10D for few hundred jump and it work very nice. the hood is part of the cast of the lens so not removable... but with a metal saw you can remove it....
teamhypoxia 0 #5 April 22, 2004 I jump the Sigma 14mm aspherical on my 10D (see attatched pic). It has a larger hood and I have never had any problems. I haven't actually tried jumping it with the barrel... never saw a reason to. Out of curiosity, I just tried it right now, and I get just the tiniest (barely noticeable) bit of dark corners so it might be feasible to attatch a filter and tape the barrel to the lens. I think that's what Deuce did with his Sigma 14, leave the barrel on and put a filter on that.. I jump the 15 without a filter. I do remove the barrel though. cloud_monkey 0 #9 May 6, 2004 If you’re looking to attach filters to you’re 15mm you should use gel filters and the little stainless steel spring clip that came in the box. That, in turn is attached to the back of the lens so you don’t have to use the hood if you don’t want to.
