freefalle 0 #1 March 17, 2004 I broke down and bought the digital rebel and I must say I am happy with it. I want to add it to my helmet and start jumping with it but Id like some advise on a lens. Im using a .5 on my PC100 and Ive been using a 28 on my 35mm still. I was looking for a fixed 17 mm figuring the 1.6 conversion would give me close to a 28. However it doesnt seem like anyone makes one. I've heard of the fixed 15 and people seem to be happy with that. Any advise??? thanks
rigga 0 #2 March 17, 2004 Hi there, Welcome to the digital stills age! I bought a Canon 300D (the UK name for the Rebel) last year and was faced with the same dilemma. I use a 19-35mm lens, set to 19mm and this gives me the same field of view as I get for my 28mm fixed lens attached to a conventional SLR camera. I got my lens from eBay. I've just checked and if you put "eos lens wide" in the seach field there are a number available, mostly from US suppliers (at around the 140 bucks mark). The particular make I've got is a Pheonix. Hope that helps - have fun with this awesome piece of camera gear! Andy
ltdiver 3 #3 March 17, 2004 You might want to look into the 20mm. Lighter weight and less expense being the primary factor that separates it from the wider view lenses. On my Sony TRV22 (with Sony .6 lens) I bump in my zoom a little and it matches up with the 20mm on my 300D just fine. I'm mainly an RW flyer, so freefliers might respond differently. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
vdschoor 0 #4 March 17, 2004 I am using the TRV 17 with a .5 lens and on my Rebel I use the 15 mm Sigma (which works out to be about 24mm on a 35mm) I am really happy with it, even the compatibility between the two. The digital stills are a little wider than the video but that's no real issue (at least not for me) 17mm is not a very common lens though, I just checked on eBay and there are a couple of Canon FD lenses at 17mm / F4, they might fit on the Digital Rebel with a converter or something. I prefer to get lenses that are made specially for the Canon, since I use the camera on the ground a lot too I like the lenses that can use autofocus and all that. skysurfcam 0 #5 March 18, 2004 Try ebay for a Tokina AT-X 17 AF PRO. (Make sure you get the pro version though). Nice lens. Brother Wayward's rule of the day... Rdutch 0 #6 March 18, 2004 If you have the Money go with the Canon 15mm, if not then get the Sigma 15. With film camera's your camera is only as good as the Lens, if you have a $1000 camera and a $100 lens you have a camera that is going to take $100 pictures. The Rebel is a pretty good Digital, and a cheap lens will only take cheap pictures. I have a Canon 20 that I have used on my digital Rebel, I find it a little small, for what I am used to, I much prefer the Sigma 15, and as soon as I can afford one, I think Im going to get the Canon 15.
