Camera Newbie questions

Recommended Posts

1. I'm pretty sure that I've seen people copying video from one persons camera to another's using a firewire connection. How does this work? Will both people see the video, assuming both cameras are in VCR mode?

2. I've figured out how to capture a video from my camera in Premiere, but is there some way to record video back to my camera via the firewire connection, after I'm done editing it?

None of this stuff seems to be in my camera's manual (PC105) so I figured that at least a few people on here have experience with these things. :)

If you use firewire to transfer footage you will see it playing on both camera screens.

To send a finished project in premiere back to your camera go to File>Export Timeline>Export to Tape. This is a good way to save your finished products so you can free up hard disk space.

1) Plug camera one and two togeather. Set both cameras to VCR mode. Camera one presses play. Camera two presses record. Both cameras display the footage.

2) It depends on your cameras. Some of the cheaper Sony DV cameras do not have "DV-In" capabilities. If yours does, try using "file / export / print to tape". There's a checkbox to start the recording on the camera automatically, otherwise you'll have to hit record on the camera.

If you have the 105 then, yes, you can record back into the camera.
When you and your friends camera's are plugged into eachother, as stated above set both camera's to VCR mode, but if you wanted to record on yours what your friend is playing....
Press the FN button, select Page 3 (i think), and press the REC CTRL? (record control) option. From here you have the option to record. (off the top of my head mind you ;) )

As for premiere, from the file menu, there is an 'Export', then 'Export to tape'. The computer will want to take control of your camera to do this (so you might have to set up the 'Device Control' settings to include Sony/Generic, as i don't think the latest version of premiere includes the 105)

I hope this makes SOME sense :)

I've tried the "export to tape" option and when I start the recording, my camera starts recording too, but it stays on the blue screen and doesn't actually record anything from premiere, it just records nothing. Can't figure out how to actually get the video and audio to show up on the camera in order to export it back.

Open your project in Premier. With your camera turned on (but not on "pause") plug in your firewire. start the project playing. you should see the project playing on your cameras LCD.(note that on your computer screen it will look like the play back of a really bad web cast and there will be no sound). sometimes I have to start the project playing before my camera will "recognize" the video stream. then press stop in Premier and move the cursor on the time line to the beginning (if you have black video in the beginning of the time line the screen on the camera should be black). Press record on your camera as you would to firewire other video and then press start in Premier.
