askir 0 #1 April 1, 2003 I just received a rig from a guy who says his kids got hold of it and lost the data card and there is no seal in it either. He seems Ok, but I don't know him, he has not jumped in along time and is from another DZ out of state. Any input is appreciated LIFE IS LIKE A CIGARETTE, YOU CAN SIT THERE AND WATCH IT BURN AWAY OR YOU CAN SMOKE THAT BITCH TO THE FILTER
skybytch 273 #2 April 1, 2003 Well, first off don't jump it until you've had a rigger inspect the entire system. Make the sale final only if your rigger gives it all a thumbs up. You might ask the seller for the names of any riggers who packed it for him in the past. The dz local to him may be able to help you locate them. If he had one person packing it they should be able to recreate a packing history for the reserve from their logbook.

Gravitymaster 0 #4 April 1, 2003 If its a container and reserve, and the Manf. are still in business, I would make sure you have the manual, do a thorough inspection, check the D.O.M. on both, make up a new packing card and send it out. Same thing I would do if the existing card was filled up.
floormonkey 0 #5 April 1, 2003 Might check stolen gear databases...not just DZ. com, but www.uspa.org (it's under marketplace) and www.itsbeenstolen.com
wmw999 2,560 #6 April 1, 2003 Hi there... I'd do as suggested, and check the stolen gear database and the manufacturer. If you have a weird feeling about it, you could call his former local DZ and see if anyone remembers him. There's bound to be a reason you can think of that doesn't sound suspicious... Maybe you're trying to "contact his old rigger" about a question? But you can make a new card any time you need ot. councilman24 37 #7 April 1, 2003 I have trouble believing a kid is going to find a data card. Most skydivers can't. And that it would coincide with him bringing to a rigger he doesn't know out of state? If not stolen he may have been forging signatures or jumping out of date. I've had people pull data cards and seals for both reasons. I had a lot of trouble with guys forging my name for several years. We had an outlaw psychotic jumper who bragged he could sign my name better than me and did it for several of his friends. Remember, you don't have to pack any rig. I have several EX customers I know have forged my name. I don't care if some one pencil packs, I'm not the FAA. But when they forge my name I get pretty upset. Any way, my cynical mind would be very suspicious. But, maybe he has very curious kids. Terry I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
