Anbody jumped a Jonathan

Recommended Posts

I just got my firts rig. And it came with a Jonathan 170 and I couldnt find any info about them in here. I've talked to several peolpe at my dz and they all had thier own opinions about them good and bad. some said try it and some said get rid of it. I just wanted to see what people had to say that have flown them. any tips, tricks or other things i should know about.
Also I've been jumping on silhouettes and saber 170's. thanks

Not exactly the best choice for a first canopy. Jonathon's are basically a Jedei sans airlocks. It is a very high-performance canopy.

At your jump #'s, you would probably be much better off and safer with a Hornet, Sabre 1 / 2, Spectre, or Tri.

I know one guy who jumps a Jonathan.. His name is Thumper and it is not because he can move is leg to a beat really fast..
'It was the way he sounded when he always hits the ground..
Get anohter canopy..
Use yours for a tent or something. I dont think there is much of a market to sell it to..

I have several hundred jumps on a Jonathon. I got it new when I had around 170 jumps. I jumped it until around 580 jumps and loaned it out for another 100 jumps. They're *alright* nothing spectacular. It seemed that each Jonathon was different than the one before it and the one after and so on. It was so much more docile than the Demo.

In comparison, my 136 flew way larger than a 135 sabre. The turn rate was similar. Being Semi elliptical though, it has some characteristics unlike the parachutes you jump already. The flare will probably be lower in the stroke than you are used to.

I don't know what your wing load is and at 55(ish) jumps it may or may not be a handful.

Since you already have it. Can you get an experienced jumper to jump it for you for a direct comparison to a silhouettes and sabre of the same size? It may just be worth putting a few jumps on it if you get the go ahead. I would tend to believe there are some worthy people at your DZ to form an unbiased and informative opinion.

It's not a bad canopy and some Jonathons were better than others. I'd keep it around any way since you probably can't sell it.

They were made by Air Time Designs. The makers of the fine Tony Suit.

They really aren't that bad. The trouble was they were'nt consistant and PD was better. The stiletto came out soon after and blew doors on every one. The Jonathon didn't have a chance. (nor did the Tomcat for that matter..who's jumped one of those? same maker as the Jonathon.)

Air Time Designs only had one design that really hit the market and stuck and I fully believe thats since the the patterns got altered all the time. The Jedei and the Sweptwing Jedei. Last I saw the serials there were over 1100 Jedei's made of some type. I've got I think 1017 (I'd have to look to be sure) and it was a March 97 canopy and Brian made canopies for a bit longer after then too.

Brian Still continues to make parachutes

Yes, and Phree is well aware of that. I believe his point was those were all that were made under the aegis of Airtime Designs.;)

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?
