Camera flying question..

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Hawkeye helmet and someone gave me the idea of flying with the camera box on the side without the camera in it to get ready for the jumps when I have one (I have a ways to go). What do you experienced camera flyers out there think? Wait until I am ready to fly camera before attaching the box or throw it on every now and again to get used to the feel?

I think it's a silly idea to put on additional risk elements (a box) anytime you're not actually flying the camera. You really don't need to "get used to" anything in terms of drag or whatever. The box itself will be the least of your worries (or should be) when it comes time to actualy fly a camera.

Be patient, get a couple hundred jumps in your log book, get some experience, get your "C" license and when you're ready to fly camera -- fly camera, not a box.

I was going to be doing this over the next dozen jumps or so with an FF2. I havn't jumped an open face helmet now for over 100 jumps and wanted to get used to the feel again before I strapped a couple of pounds of electronics to the side of my head.

I figured with the FF2 there's no snag risk (at least no more so than your average open face) so why not...

Would you think otherwise?

Helmet without box is the best way to train.
Maybe you're gonna video RW or tandems, so get used to fly with them, the same way you're gonna film them. That's what I did and just loved flying a couple of meters above (not vertical, on the side a bit to avoid any premature deployment and also depression which would make you add a participant or extract one or 2)
