bmcd308 0 #1 December 9, 2003 I remember that you were deciding between a TRV-19 and a TRV-22. I can't find a post where you told us which you wound up with and whether you're happy. Sorry if this was old news. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
quade 4 #2 December 9, 2003 Yes. I bought a TRV22, mounted it in a Bonehead dBox, slapped a Stroboframe bracked on the bottom of it and flew it as my second video camera for Nationals where I would normally have my digital still. No issues. When placing a wide angle lens on the TRV22 they have the same power as when placed on the TRV10, so there was no reshopping of lenses. Last week I removed my TRV10, slapped a Stroboframe bracket in its place and snapped the TRV22 where the TRV10 used to be. Now the TRV22 is my primary video camera. I jumped it last weekend and again, no issues. The TRV22 is quieter than my TRV10 so I no longer hear the motors and gears running while in the door or under canopy. The TRV10 was never so loud that I could hear it in freefall. The only very minor operational issue is that with the TRV10, I didn't have to remove it from the dBox in order to dub. With the TRV22, because of the placement of the A/V socket and the hinge on the dBox, I currently do have to remove the TRV22 from the dBox in order to dub.. I'm looking for a 90 degree plug that will fit and solve this issue, but the one that comes from Sony is too large and doesn't fit in the dBox while mounted on the camera. I'm not too confident that I will ever find a proper fitting plug as the space for it is very tight. That said, it's a fairly quick and simple removal and reinstall. Unplug the CamEye, unthread the hinge and pop out the camera. Adds maybe 20 seconds to the entire dubbing process. There -was- an initial installation issue of mounting the TRV22 in the dBox in that the dBox is over sized by about a quarter inch left to right and front to back. You have to make shims out of something so that when you place the camera in the box it is firmly held in place and that place will be repeatable each time you put it in. I made my shims out of old business cards and gaff tape. Now it fits like a glove. If I were to do hard core 4-way training (14 jumps a day, multiple back-to-back loads and debriefs on the ride to altitude), I'd probably opt to simply put a Stroboframe bracket on the bottom of the TRV22 and run it naked without the dBox. While this would leave the camera unprotected, it would make the in-flight debriefs far easier -- either that or cut a window in the side of the dBox so that I could see the screen. The camera is great, but the current dBox needs a little more thought.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
jeremyneas 0 #3 December 9, 2003 Quade, I never thought to use a stroboframe for my video, just stills. Do you think that there is more shake with the stroboframe attached (being a little more pivit point)? The Sony steadyshot is second to none in it's class but just curious. quade 4 #4 December 9, 2003 The Stroboframe bracket is -very- solid and steady. In my opinion, it would be more steady than a camera in -most- boxes where the camera is simply held in place by loose foam. If you where to shim the camera in the box for a snug fit, it's probably a wash.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
teamhypoxia 0 #5 December 9, 2003 The problem with a stroboframe directly on MY video camera is that it would need to be removed every time I needed to change the tape ( bottom loading tape). that's what's nice about the D-box something to consider if your camera is a bottom loader as well
quade 4 #6 December 9, 2003 Clearly. I'd love to see Sony come out with a top loading TRV type camera.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
jeremyneas 0 #7 December 10, 2003 QuoteI'd love to see Sony come out with a top loading TRV type camera. The TRV-9, the second sony TRV style digital it ever created. Bought it brand new for jumping. Just had to put mine to rest this year. Damn on/off switch is the only thing wrong with it, but cost outweights worth
quade 4 #8 December 10, 2003 BTW, I just checked and the generic Stroboframe Anti-twist Plate works pretty well with the TRV22 so mounting and removing the bracket wouldn't be that big of a deal and wouldn't cause the camera to go out of alignment. Time to change tape would be an additional 20 to 30 seconds, but you're already losing about that much time each time you take the TRV out of the dBox anyway. Which, btw, you -have- to do every time you want to dub.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

I made my shims out of old business cards and gaff tape. Now it fits like a glove. They must have reworked the TRV22 dbox since you bought yours. I -just- picked mine up last night and it fits GREAT! No extra space front-to-back at all. And the side extra space is very neatly taken up fully by the leather hand bracket I left attached to the camera. Chris also puts a black foam strip in the dbox kit for those who want to take up the lateral space a different way than I did. That said, my new TRV22 fits very snug and non-movable in it's dbox nest. QuoteThe only very minor operational issue is that with the TRV10, I didn't have to remove it from the dBox in order to dub. ...But, yeah...I didn't like discovering this last night when I put my new helmet with TRV22 together. Let me know if you find a plug that'll work so we don't have to remove the camera to dubb from. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
czechbase 0 #10 December 10, 2003 Hi Quade, Any chance of posting a picture of your setup? With cameras and all? Just curious! Thanks. www.motavi.com
jumpy 0 #11 December 10, 2003 Quade.. Would it not be possible to get an av cable and strip most of the plastic around the metal part of so its still just held in place.. gaffer tape it and you have a free bending av cable.. if that makes sence to you? Let me know if you don't know what i mean and i'll find an old cable do it to that and take a pic of it for you..
ltdiver 3 #12 December 10, 2003 Here's a crude picture of my digital set-up on my BatRak. Sorry for the bad picture, but to get the 300D in the pic I had to use another video camera and do a video capture here in the dark. :^). Some of us get up before it's light outside... ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon

quade 4 #16 December 11, 2003 Quote Any chance of posting a picture of your setup? With cameras and all? Right now I don't have a photo of it, but if you took the photo Lori posted, added a concentric ring sight and another Stroboframe bracket under the dBox -- you'd have a pretty good idea of what mine looks like. Is it the absolute most snag free? Hardly. It's very difficult to hang that much gak on a helmet and make it snag free at all. Y'all be careful out there.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
ltdiver 3 #17 December 24, 2003 As promised. A few pictures of my BatRak set-up with TRV22 and 300D. (note to those who don't know me...-yes- I know the ring site is a blank. I like it and need it that way. Works just fine and doesn't block my one and only view. ) First 4 pics here: LightDiverCam last weekend. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
