Clean export from Premiere

Recommended Posts

How can I get a clean AVI export out of Premiere? While my final destination will be tape, I want to export some high quality AVI's or MPG's. I want high quality, these are not for the WEB... They're for being played on my laptop.

All the exports I do are either interlaced, or very large files that won't play without Media Player stopping every few seconds.

The obvious answer is "check your settings", but I can't figure out which settings I should check. When I started the project, I choose the DV Standard 48mhz...

I usually export a single AVI file with DV compression from Premiere, but thats just a temporary file. Its used for encoding to DivX or MPEG.
DivX:
I reduce interlace flicker while encoding to DivX with VirtualDub. No problem with those videos, quality is best when played with the DivX player (The Playa).
MPEG:
When i encode to mpeg, i don't encode für use on a PC but for use on an SVCD, since they get played on a DVD player so i don't need deintelacing. I use TMPEG for that.

If your DV Format AVI doesn't play fluid then thats probalby because your HD can't read that fast because notebook HD are slower and DV compression requires to much space.

I would recomend encoding to a nice deinterlaced DivX Video.

VirtualDub won't read the AVI that Premiere produced... it says "couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd (unkown). VirtualDub requires a video for windows (vfw) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs , such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable"

I had exported from Premiere using 'Export timeline / Movie', and picked Microsoft DV AVI .

Thoughts?

Andyman,

So you want good quality videos for laptop playback.

Sounds like you computer is having a hard time playing back the dv compressed files. So to trouble shoot it first, send the specs of your laptop: os, processor, ram, and if you know the hardrive speed, 5400 or 7200.

I have a 2.6 P4 with 2 gigs of ram and mine play back fine. To get video files to the web I export the avi files under the normal dv codec and then pump them thru media cleaner pro. This is the best program on the market for compressing to web, mpeg and the such. The microsoft wmv format is real nice. This is what I've been using on my site. http://www.petergallistudios.com. I then use these files for viewing on my computer. they look good even at full screen.

Now you should be able to export your files thru premiere in the wmv format. I would say give it a try.

Yeah, I've been having better luck with WMV.

I've got a Dell 8200, which has a gig of Ram, a P4 at 1.7, and a 5400 rpm disk.

I just downloaded the Microsoft Windows Media Encoder, and it's doing a pretty good job of de-interlacing and losslesly compressing the file.

I should've tried Microsoft first, I guess. I'd heard so much talk about DivX, I'd figured it was the way to go. My bad.

I'm surprised Premiere doesn't do this natively... But I guess what I'm trying to do is a different market.

Everyone is going to have their favorite codec. I was a quicktime guy in the beginning, but find that the wmv is a liitle easier for everyone to see. And my production.

Also, sounds like you have a pretty fast computer but your hardrive could be the data bottleneck. 7200rpm ide hardrives helped open the market for everyone to edit at home. That could causeing the dropped frames or anti ailsing.

Sorry forgot to ask about your video card too. That would be the last consideration.

It may also help if you shut down everything in the background.

Enditall does this nicely.
