Mica 0 #1 September 23, 2003 Got a question. Up until now I have been just jumping a baggy jumpsuit for videoing. Recently I have bought a 2 piece camera suit from Hawk Suits. I have yet to jump the jacket. As silly as it sounds, the wings scare me. I've never jumped anything with such a solid wing before. I keep thinking of all the horror stories you hear about(pilot chute in burble, flipping over on deployment, unstable, etc) Any suggestions from anyone jumping a winged suit??? jimmytavino 16 #3 September 23, 2003 .. It's good to be wary of certain things,,, until we learn a little more about them..., but no need to let it intimidate you Yes some care must be taken ,, since the wings will require that you " go behind them" with your pull hand.... when you go to your pilot chute handle...If you go straight to the handle,, you theoretically could reach between the wing and your torso, and pull through the tiny space where the inside edge of the wing runs past the harness,,,,,, ( bad Bad !!!! ) don't do that...... Can you say " Horseshoe?? ". ....Pay attention when you are gearing up,,, to be sure that the ends of the wings,,,( usually clipped just below the legstraps) are routed properly and not "under " some part of your harness... Depending on how many camera jumps you may have.... maybe just wear the suit,,, no cameras,,, and go out and play with it a bit.... It is often advised to only use a container with a BOC.....and of course nowadays,,, most all rigs are built that way.... ( there was a time in the past,,, where legstrap pouches were more prominent,,, and they don't work too well w/ large wings....) So go play with your suit,,, practice a few ripcord handle touches,,,,at higher altitudes,,,, and when you throw,,,,, THROW!!!!!!!.... no "lazy ass" stuff like just taking your p. c out,, and dropping it next to you... Be real agressive,, about chucking it OUT and to the side.....soas to avoid any effect of the wing's burble...... Develop a set technique for pull time... which keeps your head square, and low,,, get in with your pull hand and get out with your pull hand,,,, maybe tuck the left elbow in a bit to "deflate that side wing,,, and stay square in the air through line stretch....( it would be REAL unusual to go "unstable" at pull time,,,cause of wings,,, but anything IS possible...) After opening,,,It may be necessary to unclip your wings at the hips,,, in order to be comfortable reaching your toggles and clearing your slider......plus after landing you can shed your gear more easily if the wings are un clipped... If it's best to find out these things,,, without the camera helmet,,, then make a few jumps that way..... Oh yes... I have found that booties work real well for me,,, and while the wings can give you some float,, the booties can let you drive, and/or turn,, while wings are still extended..... check it out,,, have fun,,, be safe..... jmy
Deuce 1 #4 September 23, 2003 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=182925;search_string=camera%20suit;#182925 I later went to the full D wing. I think you should search the subject lines of the camera forum for wing suit and you'll get a ton of other information.

Mica 0 #6 September 24, 2003 What type of wings are they and how do the lower attachment points on this particular suit work? *** I have a big D wing with RSL attachments. They gave me the rings to attach to either my pant leg or to my harness. I haven't decided which way to go yet. There may come a time where I need to where someone elses container. quade 4 #7 September 24, 2003 Ok. Yeah, those are going to be pretty scary wings for a first time jumper. Two things; You need to figure out how you're going to attach the wings. There are a couple of different methods and without seeing your exact set up I don't want to prejudice your choices. Find a local camera flyer with a similar set up and start asking questions. There is at least one fall back emergency method that should allow you to fly them no matter what rig you're wearing -- you can simply clip them to the hardwear of your leg straps, but that's going to probably not be the best fit. The other thing is you need to be absolutely certain that at pull time your hand comes oout and all the way around the wing on its way to your hacky. Grab the hacky -firmly- and give it a huge throw out to the side. No wimpy throws -- ever.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Mica 0 #9 September 24, 2003 Quote.. It's good to be wary of certain things Thanks, you been very helpful with your pointers. I never took into consideration that I was going to have to go "behind" my wing, in order to get to the pilot chute. Thanks alot.
