spencer 0 #1 August 22, 2003 It seems that more of you are going for the Sigma 14+15mm lenses than say the canon20mm, Why??. thanks.
jdhill 0 #2 August 22, 2003 Well, I have a Sigma 15mm and a Canon 20mm that I use on my D60... on that camera and the 10D a 20mm lens is equal to a 32mm on a film camera, the 15mm is equal to a 24mm... 28mm was more or less the "standard" general purpose lens for film cameras in skydiving, which is righ in between what the 15mm and 20mm lenses... with a 6MP camera you can crop quite a bit, so some have chosen the "wider is better" approach (if they can only get 1 lens)... I like having options in the bag for which lens to use... but I tend to use the 20mm more often, and the 15mm for special stuff, and up close stuff like Freeflying. Deuce 1 #3 August 22, 2003 I only have the Canon 20. I have noticed that the really good camera geeks get too close to me for full-body framing. They are used to that 28 or 20 on a film camera. So before I go up with freefliers, I have to show them how far back I need them for full frame shots. During the dirt dive I'll frame them in the camera and tell them "this is the distance we want, with my back to the sun". It has helped a lot.
blazetailman 0 #4 August 22, 2003 Jd hill brought out some good points. And it sums it up for general purpose. Wider is better. You need to fly close but this also gives you a little room and knowing if they are in the frame. This also simiulates what video and the film/digitl stills eqaull about the same focal length. Using anything bigger than the 20mm in digital is getteing in to the mid telephoto range. Your sights better be rock solid. When I first got my D60 i was using my 24mm. I got some interesting shots due the 38mm i was getting. The shot made it in a FliteSuit ad in paragear. Really nice because the image was not he normal lens eveyone else was using. For most jumping I'll use the 15mm sigma. Great lense for the price. But I'll start experimenting with my 24mm soon.www.canopyflightcenter.com www.skydivesac.com www.guanofreefly.com
fasterfaller 0 #5 August 22, 2003 Sigma makes a damn good lens . I have every Canon lens made at my disposal at work but end up with a Sigma on the camera most of the time . I find in some cases that they are sharper than the Canon L glass and cost a lot less . I have compared shots with the camera body locked on the tripod and change from a Canon lens to a Sigma lens and I cant tell which is which . I will say that the Canon f1.8 200mm and the 1200mm can not be touched by anyone . Those are the two that will stay in my bag and the others may be changed to sigma or Tamron . Tamron has a few that are sharper than the Sigma .
