triathlon 4.0 modification

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone here has jumped a triathlon with and without the modification to the brake lines, and if so, what was your opinion on performance change and openings. My girlfriend just bought her own rig and this might be something she will be interested in doing. I have jumped the triathlons without the modification and they always landed just fine.

Thanks;

Brakelines have two parts; the upper part from the canopy to the brakestow loop and the lower part from the brakestow loop to the toggles.

The upper part is a fixed length, set by the manufacturer to control the openings.

The lower part -should probably- be adjusted depending on the individual jumping the canopy.

For instance, if you're of average height and arm length, then -maybe- the way the canopy came from the manufacturer is ok for you (but probably not), but I can asure you that the toggle stroke will be incorrect for somebody with arms much shorter than "normal".

Make sense?

It's a simple adjustment that can be performed for a few bucks by a local rigger. Takes one flight to figure it out and about 10 minutes for the rigger to do the adjustment. Best of all, it's not permanent. So after awhile, when the brake lines shorten up a bit due to wear, they can be re-adjusted just as easily.

If for some reason the person's arms are -really- short, -maybe- it also calls for a change in riser length, but adjusting the lower brakeline length is probably the thing you ought to do first since it costs so little and takes practically no time to do.

I had the 4.0 mod done when I had my triathlon. The openings were better, slower, and softer heading was never a problem with that canopy. I didn't notice much difference in turns, toggles or risers but I did notice a litter more power in the flair. Packing was strange at first but I got used to it fairly quickly. All said it was a good mod worth haveing done.

actually....... the mod is re-locating the brake line attachment points (unless I have it totally backwards:S......like that would be a first!!!!..... the dealer says it would be better openings.....better flair....etc........ was just wondering if anyone had experience with the end result, but do apreciate all input.

Thanks;

I had my tri 160 relined last year with 4.0 mod, opens and flies fine, the main difference that I've noticed is lower toggle pressure and better flair. It's not that big of a difference though, I wouldn't get it done unless you needed a reline.

Last spring I re-lined Dave Huntington's Tri 190 with a 4.0 line kit. Dave reported much better flare, so much that he "popped up" the first time he jumped the new line kit. I am not sure how much of the improvement was due to the new 4.0 generation and how much was due to replacing a worn out line set that kept breaking. Anyways, Dave is quite happy with his new lines.

When I had my Tri 160 I had it done. I really only noticed an improvement in the flare but it was worth the modification. They take the two outboard steering line cascades and remove them. Then they add a cascade 1/2 cell in from the standard attachment point. Pretty much like moving all the steering line attachments 1/2 cell inboard.

I take it the new Tri's are manufactured with this update? If so, does anyone know when it was implemented at the factory?

I love the Tri 190, but my biggest bitch about the ones I've jumped is that they don't have near the flare power of (my next favorite canopy) the Spectre.

If this mod gives the Tri comparable flare to the Spectre, then I'll definitely be buying one.

I am guessing it has been around a year and a half since they started doing the mods. If you have a pre 4.0 version they will do the 4.0 steering line mod. The 4.0 model canopys manufactured also have a modification to the nose of the canopy in addition to the steering lines discussed here. I really cannot comment on the effect of the nose mod. that are on the current canopys.
