If the source video is minidv, via firewire, then why not send the back up to your camera.
The quality is better.
Recapture quailty will be better.
Recapturing is easier in the event of loss of master.
It will be faster...no rendering.
It is more reliable.
You can store more footage per buck.
You can probably store all your master source video on one tape, depending on your edit software, you can also save an edit decision list, and trimmed clips, if you want to get really geeky.
Its just all round more convenient.
Its the way I do it!.

Although it's rarely mentioned, recordable CD's/DVD's actualy don't have the 1000 years life that everybody wants us to believe.

I also find that often used DVD's (especialy recordables) are way more sensetive to dirt ans minor scratches, then any wear and tear on a videotape can ever hurt your video...

Tape would also be my advice...

go to http://www.dvdrhelp.com there are lots of tutorials what you can do with your footage... But as said before. The best way to keep it, is using DV-Tapes... The capacity on a miniDV tape is about 12 GB, that means at least 2 DVD's per tape. So the price isn't an issue, too... But it is much more convenient using DVD's instead of tapes...

However, If I can burn someone a DVD it is much easier for me than putting it on VHS and the quality rocks :-)
