Anyone seen the C31:23 error code?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has had a Sony that comes up with the error code C:31:23, and a lot of tape crinkling, especially in rewinding? Guess it happens quite a bit, just wondering how cheap it was to fix, etc...

It happened to me. It turned out to be some tiny broken widget. It cost me around $200 to fix: 2 bucks for the widget, and $198 to take the camera apart and put the widget in, then put the camera back together.
I only did it because the camera started eating (i.e. tearing in half) tapes. I'd recommend doing it before that. I lost some relatively irreplaceable footage.

31:23 is the same code I got on my pc-5. It cost $275 to fix, cause sony has a one price fix all rate. You might be able to find someone else to fix it cheaper, but I reccomend the sony route, because they not only fix what is wrong, they replace high wear parts and do a total tune up and cleaning on your camera. When mine came back it had a new on off switch, new head, new screen and door. It looked almost like a new camera. Your not going to get it fixed much cheaper, and if you can afford it I would spend the extra buck's.

Edited to add. What kind of camera do you have?
I also had a pc1 and I got this message whenever I had a moisture problem, you might want to dry your camera out a little before you send it in. Does it do it without a tape in it?.

Don't know what camera you have, this is from the PC-100 service manual - Sony codes are mostly standardized.

C31:23 - S Reel Fault - Load tape again and perform operation from the beginning.

On a PC-100 the S reel is a sensor on the FP-242 board and is hot pressed to the cassette mechanism. The entire mechanical section would need to be replaced and then adjusted. The mechanical section is more expensive than just sending it to service and requires some special equipment to adjust.

It might just be a dirty spindle or crap in the gears for the drive section. I'd pop the top and try some canned air and a good cleaning sending it for service.

Yea, it is a PC-9, and the Sony manual just says that I should send it in, no user servicable parts etc... Just trying to figure out the free repair, before I shell out $275 for the Sony action, on a $500 camera... :(
