Hotwiring an EOS

Recommended Posts

I was given a Canon EOS 850 (89 model or so).

I have found lists of remote switches for this camera, but they all plug in. This body has no plug! Arrgghh!

Has anyone pulled the body on one of these and hotwired a bite/blow switch? Any idea where I start? Maybe I can get lucky and find a different grip with the plug?

Any help?

I've got an EOS 650 and it was for that very reason that I bought a Rebel X.

You can change the grip with the same one found on the 620 model (I think that's the number). You'll need to get the GR20 grip. That will give you the standard plug you'll find on the tongue/blow switch.

Clicky here for more info. and search the page for "GRIP".

BTW, I think the Rebel X is way lighter on the neck IMO. And if you find an extra one of them GR20 grips, let me know 'coz I want one.

I'm getting the "cannot find server" message. I had searched in general for grips, but the one I kept seeing was the GR50 (I think). I never saw actual specs on it though, and wasn't about to buy it if it didn't have the socket!

I'm in the middle making the mods to mine right now. It not too difficult, but take a lok at this website first.....

OK, I finished the work on this EOS. It is totally different inside as compared to all the web documents I have found. Basically, it doesn't have the obvious tabs for the remote switch/grip mount, so i had to solder directly to the board the shutter switch is mounted to. It works, and that's all I wanted!

Note: There is very, very little room in this body with the battery and standard grip to mount a jack. I managed to squeeze it in, but it's really tight.

Bottom and front pics show the jack placement, and trust me, on this model, there is noplace else to put it!

Wires pic shows the shutter relase board, and shows which wires are for which function.

Sorry, I used the wrong colors to highlight, but these are the color of the wires on the board:
Black=Ground-signal return
Green=Focus
Purple=Shutter fire

Of course, to use all these you need a 2 stage switch, but when shooting in manual focus, you only need to fire. Here's the catch:
When in either mode, BOTH the green and the purple wires must be grounded to black to fire the shutter. Groundng just the green focuses the lense (if auto focus is turned on), while grounding just the purple does nothing. Grounding both in AF causes the camera to focus before firing, and grounding both in Manual mode causes instant firing of the shutter.

Easy to set up when you wire in a switch, I think.

OK, now for the switch. I've been seriously considering a blow switch over a tongue switch (bite is out of the question).

Any pros and/or cons of either?
